Large baby teeth

My eldest (age7) was at the dentist yesterday for a check up. He hasn't been in about 2 years. All was fine, with no work needed thankfully
The dentist did however advise me that his baby teeth are very big. His adult teeth are starting to Come through with four on the bottom and two on the top. Since they've come through the bottom teeth are already starting to push in and overlap and overcrowd each other. His top front teeth are through but are splayed apart, and overlapping the baby teeth beside them, although I am expecting them to centre properly once the next ones beside them come down. The dentist has indicated that he will most likely need orthodontic work to realign them but he says that will probably be in about 3 years time.
Does anyone have any advice for the interim? Is there anything I could do or I need to watch for? Is it better to do this work while he still has some of his baby teeth or is it usually preferable to wait until all of the adult teeth have come through when he's probably in his teenage years.
I know I need to start saving, irrespective of what route we take.
    Thanks

your son is starting a phase called 'ugly duckling' when teeth are all over the place, mix of adult and baby etc. everything should fall into line after a few years (age 12-14)
the age to start orthodontic treatment depends on the orthodontist, if it's necessary at all.

Thanks ballsy. So really there isn't anything I can do other than sit and wait for things to progress, well or otherwise, and bring him to his annual appointments.

I'd love to think he could avoid the orthodontist.
