€260 + vat? Power steering pipe

Im driving a 2002 citreon c5 2.0 hdi. Ive noticed lately that its leaking transmission fluid from a pipe at the front passengers side.

Got a quote from a main dealer of €260+ vat to supply a pipe that carries the power steering fluid.

Does anyone else think that this sounds way too expensive?

My mechanic tried that, and the connection was different.

There are no variations as far as I know, all models have power steering and hydractive suspension. Here's the service diagram for the pipework on the mk1 hdi, as you can see there's no options listed for each item, which means the same pipework was fitted to each car. It's possible there could be different pipework in a petrol car, to do with routing. €260 is steep to be honest. Which pipe on the diagram was it? I assume it's the cooling pipe, no. 3?

It's not just a power steering pipe, it does the suspension aswell. You won't get one from a scrappy as it goes all round the engine and they normally cut it to get the engine out.
Mine went on my xantia (price was exactly the same in pounds:eek:)
A Citroen dealer actually refused to sell me one, he told me to take the pipe out, cut it where it was leaking and then bring it to a tractor or trailer dealer and they would be able to join it again (it's just hydraulic hose after all) that's what I did.
There is a lot of work getting it out and back in again but you would have to pay that anyway with the new part.
    Hope that helps.

Ah Jesus, that would be my luck alright. It was probably from a petrol car the breakers ripped it from so.

It looks like no 3 alright.

My mechanic got one from a breakers alright. He said there was a fair bit of ripping to get it off.

Looks like he got one from a petrol instead of a diesel though.

Ya, it does the susp as well. Needed 5 bottles of transmission fluid to top it up, after having to put the damaged one back on again.

Any hydraulic hose supplier can make one up for you, or repair the one you have. I'd be stunned if it cost you more than €40.

I've PM'd you with details of a company who do custom hoses and pipes.

You shouldn't top it up with ATF, it won't mix with the existing fluid and is a different viscosity, which might cause issues later on. ATF works fine in conventional power steering setups, and will be fine in the PS of the C5, but will quite possible cause damage in the suspension. Only orange LDS fluid should go in, which is specific to the C5. Even the older green LHM fluid isn't compatible. Any motor factors should have the right stuff. To confuse matters even more, spurious LDS fluid (which is perfectly fine to use) is also green :D

No. 3 in the diagram is a low pressure hose that runs in front of the rad to try and cool down the fluid. As said above, any truck or tractor garage should be able to patch it up with new connectors or seals as needed. I haven't actually taken mine off before, but with the bumper off it looked quite accessible?

Guessing it's standard hydraulic hose it's under a tenner a metre and about a fiver a fitting where I go. Once the have the right fittings that is. Normally bring in the old hose in and they just make up the same.

Toyota here in Australia wanted AU$1100 for a new PS hose for a 1994 Landcruiser. It was a reinforced/high pressure hose. I got a used one for $125.

Could you please do same for me? Am looking at the very same ridiculous cost for a steering pump cable from the steering pump to the steering rack.
