Took the bottom bracket apart to check it out as there was a bit of play and to re-grease. Never opened it before.
Didn't look very worn but counted 12 ball bearings on one side and only 11 on the other. Is it missing a ball bearing?

How old are we talking - are the cranks held on with cotter pins or bolts to a tapered axle?
From memory and experience, the drive side was slightly longer to accommodate the chain ring, but the the axle diameter was the same on both sides so the number of bearings should be the same. It's a long time ago and I can only vouch for my high nelly.

It probably won't matter too much but, if there was room to get more balls into each side, it would be worth spending a fiver on a full set of new balls. Lash in a load of grease and cram in as many balls as will fit. If the balls are in a cage (sounds like they aren't), get rid of the cage and add more balls.

This has pedals with cotters, she's probably a pre-war model! Balls are loose, not in a cage.
