Need a good access point

I'm considering replacing the modem I currently use as an access point. At the minute I'm using a Linksys WRT610N as its a modem we used in UK and had lying around. However it doesn't have a dedicated Access Point setting and I've generally found it awkward to work with, so I'm looking at replacing it.

Firstly, are there dedicated Access Points you could buy, and is there an advantage to this over buying a router with that option? Not interested in the plug-in extenders as I need to be able to connect devices to this AP.

Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thanks!

An AP is just a router with the "smarts" taken out. Its a switch with antenna for the most part. Generally they're just a bit cheaper than a comparable router.

The way I have it at the minute is I've turned the DHCP Server on my router off, so it works as an access point. But I often have issue with it no giving IP addresses from the main router. Tried custom DDWRT software but that made issue worse.

So I just want to scrap any unnecessary options and have a device that's just an access point. 100% fit for purpose.

    Much to split these two?

Just realised neither of those 2 have additional LAN ports on the back, which I need.
