So it looks like the dealer on da comic had it right a few weeks back about George Lee being the new agricultural correspondent on rte. I like listening to him on the business show on saturday mornings, but I wonder will be aiming to an agricultural audience or will he just be watering it all down for the urban audience?

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

Perhaps some watering down may not be a bad thing if it makes the general public more in touch with what is happening on the ground. We'I just have to wait and see!

In fairness that a good call , pity it was not minister for ag they made him
IMO coveney is a big let down by first decoupling ALL farm payments and then trying to cancel out all leased entitlements .Can I ask what happened all the land that was stacked and was this land put in for more entitlements?

George Lee as agriculture correspondent is an insult to all those in the business. It will be Charlie Bird or Joe Duffy next.

Who do you think would cut to the chase more succinctly with respect to the intricacies of CAP, the waffle of Simon Coveney, the bullsh1t of IFA or the crap from factories over beef price!
George Lee or Kieran Mulooly the RTE midlands correspondent? Mulooly was also in for the job.
I think Lees economics training will stand him in good stead for this job.

I'm sorry but leased entiltements are a load of ****e, you should only be entitled to get funds on the ground you are farming, and just that ground, no more, no less.

Georges great mistake was getting into politics and has paid a heavy price for it.
If it gets more air time for ag his appointment can't be a bad thing,
for a country and an economy so dependant on agriculture RTE has a dreadful record on the subject.
just hope he can adapt to be more than just an economist talking about agri business.could be a steep learning curve for him ...........and us

What the feck does an ag correspondent do in rte anyhow ? Will they have a bit everyday now about farming on the news or what ? I dont see too much time given to farming as it is but I hope they make good use of him now and educate people watching the 6 o clock about farming in this country

To be fair I think he gave a good account of himself on the Sean O'Rourke programme today, displayed enthusiasm and a good enough knowledge of farming. I'll give him a chance before I'll pass judgment.

The problem is about leased land with entitlements this new regeime only suits the armchair farmer more instead of linking production with payments

I think it's a great move for Agri in Ireland. Don't think there's anyone better to show non-agri people the value of agriculture to the economy of Ireland. He is straight and there is no sh1t with him. He is good to tell things the way they are.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,246 ✭✭✭sheebadog

Not a bad move for him. What has he got to lose? Reinventing himself as the "ordinary" man of the people.
I don't know him personally but he comes across as feeble. When he left the comfy monolopilistic world of Montrose he couldn't hack it in real politic.
As being any use to Agri - give me Homer Simpson.

You can't get fired when you are a civil servant.
Still kept his job when he had a jaunt in the real world.

TBH he is very astute. He made a mistake in trying to go into politics and has paid a big price for it. I would imagine that he will find his feet fast. I will give him the benefit of doubt, I expect he will do well. Usually the agri correspondent with rte were not renown for there intellect and we have had a few plonkers. As long as he is not another Darragh McCullough we are ok. He is a good investigative journalist.

Would not mind him getting his teeth into the meat factory's, the Farmers Journal or the IFA.

Would definitely agree, Lee is inquisitive and forensic and will will look at agriculture from a different perspective . I would expect Coveney to come under the microscope bearing in mind the FG political adventure and I have no doubt that the imbalances which exist particularly between multiples and primary producers will come under the microscope . I would also expect more perspective on global matters particularly the impact of tension in Ukraine and eastern Europe in general on our agricultural sector .
His high profile will also push agriculture to the forefront of the news and this is only right as despite all the pessimism it is still perceived as a growth sector which can deliver jobs.

I fully expect him to be jsut a mouth piece for the Irish Fix-it-for-themselves Assesociation.

I hope to simon coveney im wrong. but we'll see. And I'll gladly come back and eat my words.
I hope he does read this and I hope he sees how farmers are getting shafted left right and center while the coops, factories, supermarkets, and associations are creaming it in at the expense of the regular farmer and also the end customer.

But i feel the industry is too small for investigative journalism and by that I mean its a closed shop that very few people inhabit and to get into that clique would be next to impossible. it would probably be easier to get a bishops seat at the vatican :pac:

To be fair to GL, he did very well with the economy. Particularly when himself and A.N.Other were the only ones warning of a crash against the dark forces of the Bertie mafia who prescribed suicide to any naysayer.

Politics, I was delighted to see him get elected, but yeah it turned out to be a large error. I can well imagine him getting disillusioned with politics really fast. A lot of things may have happened there. He may have miscalculated his own influence within FG, he may have been vaguely promised clout or a position of some sort, or someone else may have been whispering in his ear. Whatever did happen, I am glad for him he's out of it now. It didn't suit and rather than sticking at it he made the right choice for himself.

I just hope he won't be the journalistic version of Simon "Agri food industry" Coveney.

Take a bit of interest in what farming actually is George ;)

Agreed there are lots of area's in agriculture that could be put under the microscope. He has a talent for investigative journalism and hopefully is not there to warm a seat. He has a lot to gain and the only way he can be in the forefront is to bring issue to the table. He was sidlined after his abortive entry to politics.

Be careful what you wish for Pudsey. We might not be thrilled if he started investigating all of our farm practices.

Would have liked him to have covered the horsemeat scandal.
perhaps he may explain otm beef prices or lamb price sculdugery.

But there was no horse meat scandal in Ireland. Did the investigation not find that no one put horse meat into the food chain?
It was all them furrin fellows out in central Europe what did it.

(no horses to be got this year, so beef price hammered)

Yeah, and what ever about him I'm glad to see rte doing an actual reasonable piece and trying to outline the issue of straying dogs, bout time they did, it may have been covered in the likes of Ettg before but thats not much use, more people likely to be watching the 6.1!
