Hi I failed nct a few days ago on brake rear backplates on both sides, advanced corrosion. Brakes would have to be retested because of it though it looks like they passed it just says N/D. Its a 2000 vw bora tdi. what do I have to exactly get can anyone explain?

You have to get new back plates on the rear drums.

You'll need the backplates and you'll have to transfer all the brake parts onto it once it's fitted.

I had advanced corrosion on a Toyota caused I presume by the salt on the roads. Anyway, the backplates were about 300 each from Toyota so I went to a breakers and got the full hub assy in great shape for €50.

    .... rear drums.

Sorry to be pedantic but a 2000 VW Bora has pads/discs on the rear.

    What exactly are these backplates?

would a breakers be my best bet rather than trying to get the parts new?

Does it? I don't think my '00 Golf Tdi did.

EDIT: ...but I can't be certain, and I don't doubt you. It was just the mention of back plates here that made me think drums.

Its just a metal plate that stones stones and other crap hitting off and getting stuck in the brakes. Like this http://thumbs1.ebaystatic.com/d/l225/m/muesaPSKHH95NMwb9mxURSQ.jpg

So did my Toyota, but still had backplates. They carry the handbrake shoes and presumably offer some cover to the inside of the disc.

So it's the cowl. Why would this fail an NCT? Maybe it was fouling something.......?

My 1.4 (AHW) 16V 2000 VW Bora had pads/discs at the rear so I'd imagine a TDi would have similar.

  • Thanks I have an idea what I have to get now.

It can only be item 8 in the attachment. There are no separate shoes for the handbrake. It puzzles me as to how this failed the NCT. Unless we've a terminology issue.

Usual incompetent staff! Just like my wife's 99 Fiat seicento that failed for no Air Bag indicator about 3 years ago! (THE FCUKING CAR HAS A MECHANICAL AIR BAG SYSTEM). Unbelievably incompetence.

While the part isn't a functional component of the brake system, it still serves a purpose (or else it wouldn't be there) if its corroded and rusty its not going to to its job correctly and may well break off depending on how corroded it is.

It's a glorified mud-flap. If it was mine it would get cut and a bit welded in, but that's not an option for everyone, so maybe a breakers op?

I agree but it seems OTT for an NCT fail.

They're all coroded. It failed on advance corrosion. About to fall off probably. Could damage a brake hose or the like. Easy things to fit but they are expensive new. Have a look on the internet for cheap ones OP.

And what happened then? Did you complain or retest it another tester knew better.
