BRIDIE IS SUPREME & ROBERT TOP DOG
    23/03/2014
There was a twist in the tail at the very end of proceedings at the Irish National Greyhound Awards at Athlone on Sunday.
It appeared that all the crystal trophies had been handed out but one or two shrewd folk in the audience did suspect that something was amiss as one trophy remained unclaimed on the presentation table!
Then came the final act of the very pleasant lunchtime gathering when it was announced that the Irish Greyhound Board had decided to inaugurate a new Supreme Greyhound of the Year Award, quite separate to the Dog and Bitch Awards which had already been handed out.
In the distant past there had been a Supreme Greyhound every year but since the introduction of the Bitch Award, two separate awards ran side by side. Imagine the sense of surprise for young owner Bill Chawke as he suddenly realised that his bitch Locnamon Bridie had been chosen as the Supreme Greyhound of the Year.
Winning two classics, the Oaks and the St Leger, had made her an automatic choice for the female award but she had also won the Limerick Oaks. She was trained by Paul Hennessy to her great triumphs and was bred in Kilkenny by Ger Langton.
Meanwhile there was no real surprise in the announcement that Larry Dunne’s Slippery Robert was the Dog of the Year. He had won the Irish Derby most impressively and had previously won the Joe
Dunne Memorial also at Shelbourne. He was trained by Robert Gleeson and was also bred by Dunne.
For Ger Langton it was a trebly happy occasion as Locnamon Bridie won the two trophies and he had a third thanks to Bridie’s dam Locnamon Nell as she was named the Brood Bitch of the Year.
