Let me introduce myself. I'm a newbie to Boards.ie. I'm in the process of getting my citizenship to Ireland. I now live in Philadelphia, PA USA & will be moving sometime soon. I am retiring & I'd like to move to Clifden. I'm an artist & Clifden seems to be the place to paint. It is quite beautiful from the photos I've seen. I've been to Ireland, but unfortunately I have not visited this area of the country. I have been in the East & South.

I would love to hear from people who live there, so I can hear about what life is like, what to expect, etc.

    Thanks to all,
    Janet

Clifden is a small town with a population of around 2000 people. It has 5 hotels,7 pubs,4 supermarkets,2 petrol stations,2 chemists,a garda (police) station,a library,3 hardware stores,2 garages,a small hospital ,2 banks,a post office, credit union as well as some smaller shops. It depends a lot on tourism in the summer as there is little other industry in the area. During the year there is an arts festival.http://www.clifdenartsweek.ie, a connemara pony show as well as other festivals. Here are a few other links you may find interesting.http://www.connemarajournal.ie ,http://www.connemara.net ,http://www.connemaraponysales.com ,http://www.visitconnemara.com http://www.goconnemara.com

Thanks for the links jjf1974. It is much appreciated as I'm trying to learn as much as possible about Clifden. Connemara is breathtaking, so absolutely beautiful, thanks again!

I holiday in the area every summer and you're not wrong when you say it's gorgeous. But as jjf1974 says it's completely dependent on tourism, so it's very busy during the summer months and quiet enough for the rest of the year. I know there's a bus to/from Galway city which is quite regular. However I am a tourist in the area myself so I have no idea what people who actually live there do to entertain themselves, I know there's a golf course, and a fair few surfing spots. But if you're an artist looking for scenery to paint, Connemara is the place to go.
