Car dealer and payment / BMW Full Service History

    Hi,

I visited an interested car yesterday: BMW 5 Series 2011. I really like that car and the price is pretty good. The car was at the dealer place. However the car is owned by his wife. But the dealer wants me to make a bank draft or transfer directly to his wife account.
What do you think? Is the payment has not be to the dealer directly? What about the warranty in that case?
He told me the warranty will be cover by the manufacturer anyway but I still think it is not the same kind for warranty...

He told me also the car was bought in NOI but when I checked with motorcheck.ie, the website tells me it is a 100% Irish car... The website cannot check the odometer...

I also have some doubts about the Full Service History book has it doesn't contain any reference of the car, so how can I know if that book comes for that car? And one dealer stamp is missing...

    Thanks.

Run away. He clearly wants it sold clear of the garage business. By paying his wife, you will be conducting a private sale I would have thought and as such you will have no warranty if manufacturer warranty is out.
You have to consider his reasons for wanting to do it that way.
Dodgy car? Possibly write off, flooded, clocked or money pit.
Dodgy tax affairs. Still means private sale as far as you are concerned.

Why risk any of that. I wouldnt even consider it. I would ask him for fun why he cannot take the car into stock officially and sell it to you direct from the business with all the protection that this would offer you.

The service book should have the car details somewhere inside the front cover. Most makes have a factory sticker with all the cars details from chassis number to option codes attached to the service book.
It all sounds dodgy as hell. Lying about it being imported. Are the clocks in miles or Km?
    Any link to the advert?

    Link to car please?
Maybe the ad can shed some light on how it is advertised.

Plenty of other 2011 BMW 5 series for sale. I would walk and buy else where.

It's just a normal private sale.
If car is good, and price right, then I can see no reason not to buy it.
Manufacturer warranty (if still applies) should cover the car, even after owner change.

Are you suggesting that this is genuinely the wifes car and is just being innocently sold on?

Not only is the warranty in question, it also helps his non declared profit. It's either a private sale or through the garage, he can't have it both ways. He can easily transfer it into the garages name without adding another owner, but whatever his reasons are you are the one who has the potential to lose out. Walk away.

    Why not?
Just a glance at logbook and you can find out whose car it is, and how long it belong to that person.

I dont care what the logbook says. He is advertising it off his forecourt and trying to take private payment. Its dodgy as f*ck.

I would assume this means where the dealer sells his cars from, ie , the forecourt

There is no way I would be buying a €30k+ car in this manner. Tax dealings aside, if the car is being sold privately then the OP has no protection under the Sale of Goods act. When was the car first registered? BMWs came with a 3 year warranty so at most that car has 8 months warranty left on it, realistically it might have only a month left and warranty will only cover mechanical failure. It will not protect the buyer if the car is not straight. That is a hell of a lot of money to be sinking into a car with no comeback imo.

Thank you for all your replies. I think that helped me a lot.
That deal is doggy for sure. Especially for the payment to his wife... and I don't want to take the risk of problem after the purchase.
The car that I am looking for is quite specific (external color, seat color, sport model) and I cannot find every day (even week) a car like that. Anyway I prefer to take more time and be sure of the car than to take that risk.
I prefer to not give you the link of that Irish dealer (at least publicly) but the add is from the dealer website, it has not appeared on private add.
bazz26, the first registration of the car is 05/2011.
CiniO, I wanted only to deal with a dealer, not private sale as I really want to not have any problem with the car after purchase. And for that reason I'd like to be sure I can get the Full Service History.

In that case definitely avoid it.

Buying from a dealer doesn't really warrant trouble free motoring, but surely is safer than buying privately.
On the other hand there might be lots of savings to be done when buying privately, which in many cases might be worth it.
Not from this dealer wife though, if he advertises private car on dealer website.

That would mean the original BMW warranty is up in just over a month or so.

Have you considered going to the UK as you may have a better chance of getting the spec you want. Plus if you buy an Assured used BMW from a UK BMW dealer then the warranty they offer on them maybe valid over here. At the very least you may be able to purchase an extended BMW warranty. You might pay top dollar for the car from a BMW dealer but their cars tend to be best examples available with the lowest risk.
