Looking to change the motor in the next couple of months. Looking at 2008 - 2010 a5's. Anyone have one? Are they reliable/expensive to maintain?

    Thanks.

Moved from AH to Motors, please note their charter now applies.

There's a motors forum on boards where posters will debate the likeability of audi's in general. Most will suggest you look at volvo's or saabs or anything other than an audi

Posted while thread was in transit from AH to Motoring and therefore was posted in AH jest. Apologies.

OP, I've an A4 2.0 tdi and it's pretty expensive to run taking into account fuel consumption and replacement parts/servicing etc. I still love it though, so once you have the finances to keep/maintain an A5, then go for it.

Thought they'd be fairly cheap to run, given the shared components throughout VAG?

Ive an A5 1.8Tfsi from new in 08.
Very cheap to maintain to be fair. Being the petrol, the maintenance bill is alot cheaper than the diesels. It has a timing chain so no timing belt bill. Also none of the expensive failures associated with the diesels such as dpf and dmf. Ive 85k miles on mine now and aside from basic consumables for servicing, the only failures outside of warranty have been the water pump and the dreaded window regulators which are a known fault. Audi are helping with costs associated with those.
In initial warranty period, i had a few issues, aircon dumped all its gas and also ignition module developed a fault.
I keep a dealer history by availing of a service offer for oil and filter change & inspection when due and generally do most other maintenance myself so that keeps the costs down. In general, the petrol version is cheaper to maintain than a base diesel golf. Tyres would add some cost though depending on size you would be running.
If looking at the A5, be aware that the front drive versions are not a good drive. front wheels tend to hop if trying to get out of a junction in a hurry and given the 245 wide tyres, it tends to want to move around on all but the best road surfaces.
The tax on mine is 570. Tax on a 2.0 tdi is probably half that. Fuel consumption is around 30 mpg not being light on the pedal. 3.0 tdi is the best buy really being quattro. The 2.0 tdi / Tfsi are available with quattro but are rare.
I will be offering my very well minded one for sale shortly hopefully :)

What will you be trading for Mickdw? Are you staying in the Audi fold? The new TT looks like a cracking little car.

You can't just say that without more info!

I had a TT mk 1 a few years back. Im a bit too big and ugly now for a TT I think.
Will be looking at used cars anyway this time maybe 3 years old or so. Im open to all sorts tbh. No wife / kids to think about and mileage is not huge so anything is possible.
    Audi is out unless quattro.

Will be looking at stuff around 30k i think.

Going off topic slightly but will be interesting to see the mark 2 A5 2015/16, high time i think as its dated alot since its release and the refresh didn't add hugely to its appeal.Expecting big things to fight off the 4 series

Ill be in a similar position to focus225 in a few months. Dead set on an A5. Im monitoring done deal and carzone daily. I would have upgraded last year but my budget was about 14k then so bought a 08 A4 TDI in great nick. Shouldn't be too difficult to move on I hope and the car hasn't given me a spot of bother.

I will have 18k to 20k to spend, I'm not sure that will stretch to a 2010 but we'll see whats out there. I'd have no issues going for the sports back as in my opinion they look good also as well as practical. My preference would be 2.0TDI but I will consider 1.8TSFI as at the moment my daily drive is relatively short. Having said that I did take the 1.8 petrol model for test drive last year and I wasn't overly impressed with the power. Can't have it everyway I guess....

2.0 TFSI can be had with over 200 bhp.

Sorry meant TFSI. Ya thats true, they aren't as common though.

Focus225 - Any luck with the purchase yet?

Looking at A5 now. Have a 2012 2.0lt SE overnight from dealer. Had 2 A4s before this and wife has a 2014 A4. Think this looks a might better machine than even the A6 but a lot of previous threads recommend A6 over it.

Took it on a few country roads and handling was as good as usual.

If you are considering buying a 2.0 Tfsi be sure and Google "audi 2.0tfsi oil consumption" before buying.

I have had an Audi A3 for almost 6 years and I haven't had any to have any work done to it (just general upkeep work). Its passed the NCT first time everytime. Im currently looking to buy an A4 or A5 myself now and to be honest, I don't think I would stray from an Audi after my experience with them.

Anyone have an opinion on what would be my best option on buying a '08 Audi A5, probably a 2.7 TDI SPORT. Would it be worth going to England /NI for the saving, higher spec? Could spend around 15K

Since I last posted 8 months ago I've picked up a 2010 s-line A5 TDI coupe. Couldn't be happier. Cheap to run. Any half decent drive will get you 45+mpg. Cost 19k, but got him down from 22k. Even though I don't require 4 door, I do have a thing for the sportsback. If I end up changing I think that would be what I'll pick up.
