    Assuming you have the correct towbar, you simply remove the part with the tow ball from the rest of the towbar body.

    If you look at the very 1st drawing in the link you provided, it shows the towbar in two parts....the bigger part is the crossmember.

    All they are telling you to do is remove the ball from the rest of the towbar.

    i guess a previous owner put it as illustrated in diagram 21 in the bag in the middle of spare wheel... and when someone got a flat tire it was misplaced...

    ballix gotta source another one! car only cost a grand so it could be a hunt to get one for a reasonable price

    If that's original volvo towbar, then main dealer will be the place to ask.
    They surely should be able to order one for you.
