Just sitting here with one of my mates and my alarm went off, i have no gas appliances but my fire is lighting.

It was shoved in a box in the utility room behind two closed doors, Im panicking my fiancee and mother think im over reacting. Could it be a fault

Same happened to me a year or two ago, it was in a a box way in another room backing into the sitting room, we had just moved in, fire was lighting, freaked a bit put out the fire, turns out there was a crack in the chimney and back boiler had a leak... But don't know if it was real or error but never went off again before or after fireplace was fixed, get it checked better safe than sorry...

Is the fire still lit because carbon monoxide is produced by all fossil fuel burning appliances.
Be careful people have been killed by CO from a crisp bag getting stuck up a chimney and blocking it

Put your alarm into room with fire.Get chimney checked to be on the safe side.CO alarms generally don't give false alarms

I arrived at the boat one day last year to hear "Fire Fire" from a joint smoke and carbon monoxide alarm inside. The desiccant dehumidifier was timed to be on, but no gas or anything else.
Nothing wrong when we opened up - but very frightening for a few minutes.
    Jim.

Have the alarm in the sitting room now hasnt gone off. Surely would have went off again by now if there was co present

Does it give a reading on the LCD screen or anything?

At least open a window to let some fresh air in, even if it is an error.

As I said they normally don't go off for no reason. If it's not sounding in the room you should be alright but I would still try and look into why it went off was there any appliance on when it sounded

How do you know the chimney isn't partially blocked.

You have a gizmo gadget that you have in your home to indicate a presence of a substance that can kill you, isn't it better to assume that there is a risk untill you've proved otherwise.

Dont know why anyone would have them hidden away

Anyway, I had an incident with my CO alarm also. Check link below

Ours was still in the left to unpack pile, ever since, in a prominent place and regularly checked....

    Interesting link.

Found the culprit, Hot ashes in a metal bucket sitting in the utility room. Ive put the ashes out side opened the window in the adjacent bathroom and closed the utility room door.

Great that you found the cause. Someone died a while ago after bringing a used disposable BBQ into their tent. You can't be too careful.

How long are the batteries in the alarm could be going dead maybe change them or could have a faulty wire in the alarm and also the other option in there was a build up of gas and somehow its gone.

Edit: Just read rest of thread. Good you have it sorted
