Well because I'm an idiot I lost a load of photos on a HD that I was always planning on backing up properly and sensibly ----> next week etc :(

    - Lesson learnt and am really anxious to get these back as have lots of family pics on there.

The thing is I don't have €600+ to send it of to a specialist repair company as I hear thats what these cost.

Also the drive died cause of a voltage spike so am 99% sure due to the situation and symptoms present in drive now that a good electronics repair person could help me out as usually its just a case of mending the IC on the circuit board that got fried.

I also have a second identical working HD so often a chip transplant from board to board can cure this.

Anyone have any suggestions for Limerick area or reasonable distance?

    Thanks!

would going to one of the laptop repair places in town work? the one up by the train station, on parnell street(near the animal welfare charity shop) is a good place. dunno would they do that though but you could chance it?

I'm sure that of the data-recovery places around (google them) would achieve this for you since you have a 2nd identical drive you're in a good enough position and it shouldn't cost all that much really. The "chip transplant" (as you so called it :P) is simple. If it works or not is another kettle of fish.

I hope you get this sorted :)

Limerick Computer Centre advertise as being able to do this.

    http://limerickcomputers.ie/services/data-recovery-limerick.html

We did try to use them to recover data from a damaged drive, but neither he nor a UK company could, so it was probably f*cked.

Probably the place to try in limerick.
