The evil beast that was Fred Phelps died yesterday. Do people think there is a hell for him to go to?

State of mind sometimes, you can be an utterly miserable millionaire or a jolly shanty town dweller.
I've seen a guy about town, used to come into a shop I worked in, needlessly angry constantly at any small possible thing, walking around with a pissed off face, needlessly living in a self created miserable world of vitriol and curses. A self created hell of sorts.

Just because it is unprovable does not mean it doesn't matter.

In the event that it does exist, it would matter quite a bit.

It's a bit like saying - I don't know/can't prove if dark matter exists, so it doesn't matter.

I don't necessarily think Phelps is in hell. In order to commit a mortal sin you have to have full knowledge that what you're doing is inherently wrong - nutjobs who genuinely have come to believe that the path they're walking is the right path, however twisted, are not necessarily in possession of that requirement for mortal sin.
A mortal sinner is someone who is walking an evil path and knows how wrong it is for them to be doing so.
