Water Filtration/Cleaning System

    Hi Folks,

We bought our house in Balbriggan in March of 2011. The area suffers from very bad limescale and we had been thinking if it was possible to put some system in place to clean the water and remove the limescale.
I don't know anything about plumbing so please keep it simple for me if you have any advice. The main query I'd have is this 'Would the damage to the piping already be done after 3 years of use or is it still early enough to put in a system and not have any long term damage done to the piping'.

It's a small two bed property with just the missus and myself. Where do these typically get installed? Are they expensive?

Many thanks for all and any replies.

I know that reverse osmosis systems are going for a lot cheaper these days, circa €180, and have always been considered best for the likes of limescale and flouride extraction. They're fitted below the tap, I believe. Google 'reverse osmosis ireland' and that should set you straight.

I'm afraid I couldn't tell you about potential pipning damage though, Sorry.

I got a water softener fitted before Christmas and their isn't a trace of lime anywhere now, all the taps and showers are free of lime now, I would imagine the plumbing system has cleaned itself out by now aswell

Reverse Osmosis will not do a thing for limescale in your house. If your on a well you need to have your water tested by a lab. This will determine water hardness and any other contaminants present.

If its a public supply a water softener is required. These are installed at the mains and treat the whole house. Clack water softeners are by far the very best softeners avaliable. Stay away from cheap chinese ones.

expect to pay from 600 to 900 ish for a clack unit installed. Maybe more in dublin .The service life of these units are 20+ years and cost roughly 50e annually to run.
