Maya wont let me Extrude

Hi guys i have a problems at the moment in maya i am after drawing a polygon and maya wont let me Extrude from it Eg i am getting a odd red error in the bottom right hand corner I have never got this problem before in maya and i am still very new to it so i have no idea what to do
