Help in identifying retro Sega Master System/Megadrive game

Hey guys, need help in identifying a game I used to play at a friends house when I was younger. It was either on the Sega Master System or Megadrive, can't remember as it was a long time ago. Would love to know what it is called so I can get a copy of it.

It was basically a side scrolling beat 'um up where you had to fight a boss at the end of each level. When you defeated the boss, you got the option to play as that boss you defeated and so use their special attacks. It was a kung-fu style game from what I remember and the graphics were basic so I'm leaning towards it being on the Master System.

Anyway google ain't working for me so any help would be appreciated. Cheers.

No, it's more like Double Dragon where you have to progress through levels rather than a straight up fighter.

A rough year would help. Maybe it was Vigilante or Renegade? Very similar to Double Dragon.

    Master of the Universe

The playing as a boss thing has me stumped. I know you can unlock the boss Roo in Streets of Rage III and play as him but I don't think that's it as it's on the Megadrive.

Could it be something like the original Shinobi on the Master System?

Was the movement all on one plane (so straight across the screen) or could you move around the environment like in Double Dragon etc?

It would have been around 1993/94 when I played it I think. It was a long time ago so my memory of it isn't crystal clear. It's not Renegade, I've never played Vigilante so I'll have to check it out first. I was the Nintendo guy and my friend was the Sega guy so he owned the game, hence why I don't remember the name as I would have if I owned it.

Ya its the boss thing that makes it stick out in my mind, I've never come across a game that does the same thing. I remember having arguments over who got to be the newly defeated boss when playing 2 player as they each had different special abilities. One boss was fat and had a strong palm punch, another threw throwing stars. Each level boss was playable once you defeated them and you could continue your quest as them.

Not sure if it was one plane or not to be honest. Pretty sure it's not Shinobi though or Streets of Rage III.

    It wasn't Black Belt?

Only other one I can think of is Kenseiden.

You sure it was on master system, 93-94 is very late to have had a master system (saying that I still only had a C64).

No it was definitely a side scroller.

No supernatural theme so wouldn't have been Kenseiden. Not black belt either.

Not sure it was on the master system, I'm just leaning towards it because the graphics were more like a master system game, sort of blocky like double dragon rather than streets of rage 2 detail. It would have been around the time people were changing generations so could have been either but was definitely a sega console.

Cheers for the help anyway guys. The boss thing is such an unusual aspect, I thought it would have been well known. It's name has been bugging me for years since I started playing retro games!

It could be one of the two Shinobi games on the game gear. both let you play as new characters after you beat a level with new skills.

It was a console though. Also more of a traditional side scrolling beat em up rather than having to jump around platforms and obstacles type shinobi game.

    Not Gunstar hero's either.

Onely game that sort of matches your description is Dark Saviour on the Sega Saturn, it was an isometric action RPG, you could control bosses later in the game. pix-Dark_Savior-02.jpg
