Tai Chi Chuan ranges from gentle waving arms aimlessly to a complete martial art, you have new age versions that view chi as Jedi force and more practical and traditional versions that see chi traditionally as a "relationship" - that of yin and yang and the flow of such, so inner and outer = breath and movement, upper and lower body and right and left coordinated so basically really efficient movement and use of power.
It should be notes that the chi in tai chi is not chi. Tai chi chuan translates as grand ultimate fist but grand ultimate is the name of the yin yang symbol so really we are talking of yin-yang boxing system.

I teach in the north side, I have no commercial interest here, I share this info to save you wasting time, our only forever diminishing asset!

I second the reply, the YMAA tai chi Chuan as taught by Paul Moran is solid and complete martial art, some of his students regularly compete in sanshou, so I'm sure what he teaches has been well tested!

That's seriously important if you seek a martial art as tai chi probably has the most charlatans of any martial art! 99.99% is a total waste of time martially!
