Extra Subjects Outside of School - Who signs off on students project work?

    Hi,

If you were to do an extra Leaving Cert subject outside of school e.g. LCVP which has a portfolio section to it, which teacher signs off on the P2 form? This subject involves 60% portfolio work done over 2 years by each student under the guidance of the LCVP teacher - not to be done in class time. IN the usual run of things the LCVP teacher signs off on the P2 form towards the end of the school year in 6th year implying they know the students did this work themselves and were guided as such by the teacher. The student also signs this. If a student does LCVP as an extra subject outside of school, they must inform their principal that they want to sit the paper in May (am I right?) and submit their portfolio and sign the P2 form. Any advice on this? The grind teacher would be guiding as such but surely does not sign? Can an existing LCVP teacher in their school who may not be teaching the subject that year sign off on it? Thanks for any guidance!

Thanks for your reply. Is that because of the combination of subjects you need to do etc to qualify for it? Would Ag Science be different so? There is lab work in that. Thanks for your help!

I think its because its because they want to ensure people put the required amount of time into it rather than bit of study and chance the exam. Same with the qualifying subjects, I think your combinations must be studied in the school you are doing LCVP and hence outside subjects don't count.

Regarding things like Ag Sc, sometimes a teacher will let the child in for expts and sign off whilst sometimes its the grinds teacher facilitates it and signs off on it.

Only someone who supervised the doing of the project can sign off as it is attesting that it is the student's own work.

I know this issue has arisen in my school a few times, the teachers don't sign off on work which they cant verify..either the grinds teacher does or else the principal does but not the actual class teacher.

Thanks for replies. Solerina, what would happen re the P2 form if the grinds teacher was to sign off on it? Would the school be happy to register the student and then pass on the p2 form to the grinds teacher?

I can't see how LCVP can be completed outside school. It's a pretty intense programme if you want to do well in it and needs to be followed inside school. There are a lot of different activities involved and it's really not something that should be carried out under a grind teacher.

I have never actually been involved personally but yes I would imagine so...I presume the secretary would get the grinds teacher in to sign the form...I really cant see my principal drawing the 'wrath' of parents down her if their little darlings were denied their chance to submit the portfolio, but she wouldn't expect the main class teacher to sign off that's for sure

I know Solerina, I can't see a lot of principals who would refuse it if the grinds teacher was exclusively signing off on the portfolio work and thus had no responsibility over it. It's kind of a grey area isn't it. I'm sure the same arises with subjects like Ag Science where there is lab work involved. Plenty of people do this outside of school and it is accommodated.
