Sky On Demand Connector

    Hi
Got Sky installed earlier this week, Sky+HD in the sitting room and standard Sky box in the bedroom on multiviewing.

The engineer also connected an On Demand Connector in the bedroom (I had left him to it so only saw it after he left!) From what I can see online and on Skys website, does this not only work on a Sky+ box?
Just wondering why he connected it - I tried to set up through my modem but it keeps failing so just wondering if I should just unplug it and forget about it!

    Thanks :)

The on demand connector only works with sky hd boxes.....

All new boxes have it built in older models dont, u need to connect it and reboot it for it be recognised by the box, it will then scan for a network and if its not already done it will ask you for the security key on your wifi router..

If however its an old router using a wep key for encryption common will alot of older Eircom routers especially but not always the case, the on demand will not connect no matter how many times you try the key so u will need to change the key preferably to a WPA or better again WPA2 encryption key which is safer and less hackable...

If you dont need to change your encryption key you will then need to change and add all your other devices eg laptops phones etc... again

    Hi! Thanks for the reply...
So even though its just a standard sky hd box (no +) in the bedroom, a reboot on it and it should connect? I have a new modem from vodafone for fibre broadband...

Yes connect it to the back of the sky hd box then unplug the Sky hd box from the wall and plug it back in after a min it will then tell you it has detected a network enter the encryption code and u should be good to go :-)

But if it's not a + box, then how is it going to store the on-demand download?

It won't, you won't be able to get OnDemand.

Sky HD boxes haven't been updated to support the connector yet, installers just have to connect them up ready.

You may address that to @steveon - I was just pointing out the obvious;)
I think you can (or will be able to) use the On Demand connector on a multiroom(multiscreen) box in place of a telephone line to order Box Office events or movies. But no On Demand downloads because it's got no disk drive. Seems like a way to burn up additional electricity (about 2W) while being useless about 99% of the time.

    Thanks all!
Think I will just disconnect and put it away as it's of no use whatsoever to me!!

I might be missing something here...but why not connect it to the HD box in the living room?

Because the box in the sitting room is sky+ wit built in wifi so already have on demand etc through it....
Rang sky last night and asked about it - he said he'd no idea why it was put there as it'll never connect being a standard box!

I've found that you can use the On Demand connector as a wi-fi dongle on a PC or laptop but the wireless performance is pretty appalling and also very odd. Running a speedtest I got 2Mb download and 5Mb upload:eek: which is sort of the opposite you need for a device to download programmes on demand.
I just re-connected it to my SKY + box and I let it download stuff in the background.
