Sisters kids broke the sensor bar on their wii, and she was going to get SMG and SMG2 on my recommendation (one of them is old enough to be able to manage it now!). Thing is, is the sensor bar needed for these games?

far as I remember there are moments when you use the pointer to gather the little glittery stars scattered around the levels, which is important for unlocking other levels, and player 2 can use their pointer to stun enemies by shooting them. But I don't remember any game breaking moments that needed the sensor bar. (I played SMG2)

Sensor bar replacements are cheap - it's just 2 ir emitters on a stick. You can use 2 candles. Although they might melt your telly.

You can buy a Wii sensor bar for less than €3 delivered

You would absolutely need a sensor bar. But like banjo and ally say, its cheap as chips.

You can put two lights of any kind on top of the tv, same thing as a sensor bar.
