Good age to get kids into a running club?

My little fella (5 since Nov) just joined a hurling club last weekend and loved his first session - basically playing games, that involves running and jumping.

(All the experts believe that kids learning hurling should be starting it from the ages of 4 or 5 and definitely by 7 years old or they will never master the skills to compete with their peers.)

Even though he's not the fastest he has a good stride and a good engine so I thought when hurling is done for the winter I might register him with a running club.

He will be going on 6 at that stage, just wondering has anyone else got kids involved in running at that age or is it too young for formal training?

We've a little athletics program in our club for kids 4/5 and up. It's very popular, so much so that we're not taking any more kids.

Little Athletics in our club too, from Senior Infants up. It's mostly games at that age, but as they get older the warm-up becomes more advanced, there's more straight running etc

God help me when my daughter starts. She already takes my watch, puts it on her wrists, press the button and runs around the house and presses when done. Garmin got her at a young age:eek:

My oldest fella just started with the Athletics club after xmas, he has turned 7. They wont take them under 7 here. He loves it, great mix of activities and fun. He also does Gaelic and soccer. Id say go for it if they take them at that age.
