Import Registration Numbers

    Just wondering about something....
I was under the impression that all imports would be given a registration number from a sequence that was higher than the highest registered number for a given county in the year 2000 i.e all imports registered in Dublin would have a number in excess of 120000. Indeed this is the case for my own car, it's a 2008 and the reg is well above 120,000. However a friend of mine has just imported a 2011 car and he has been given a number in the mid 40,000s.
Does anyone know if the system has changed again?
    Thanks

Was the car exported and then re-imported, getting its original number back?

I think if a car has been scrapped it's reg can be used again. Maybe there are some kinks in the system. Maybe a registration was reserved for a car a some point before the car was received and it was cancelled. Guess here. No shooting me if I am wrong.

the high numbers only applied to a few years and now are back to normal usage of the next available number. 2010 or 11 was the first year to revert to normal

    Thanks for all the replies.

@corktina: any idea what the thinking behind having the high numbers for a few years was? Seems like an odd thing to do to target buyers for a short period before reverting to the regular system.

It was due to a computer glitch that I could never get my head round :-)

To avoid the possibility of duplicating an existing reg number. I know that doesn't explain how this could actually happen, but that is the reason - a quick and lazy solution to a an odd (potential) issue.

BTW, even if the system is back to sequential numbers now there is no way a Dublin number in the 40k range could be issued after March/April (whatever) of that particular year, as they would already be allocated.

I licensed a 2010 the other day, and it got a 10CE96XX number.

This thing with high import numbers was introduced AFAIR in 2011 when new computer system came in.
It was unable to handle old numbers together with new ones, so what they did was to assign higher number than highest ever used for any car imported first registered up to 2010.
However cars from 2011 onwards, whether imported or orignally registered here, always used to get sequential numbers. Computer system was able to handle this.

I thought the high numbers were due to high sales :o

Just found some stats....there were 89896 cars registered in the whole country in 2011, 33.84% in Dublin which accounts for 30420 which would mean that a 2011 import could get an 11-D-46### number.
