JobBridge payments

I started an internship earlier than I should have- meaning I wasn't eligible at the time the job started but worked there for free for a month. I then left the internship a few weeks ago but didn't tell the social welfare because the company had owed me for the few weeks and had agreed to put in my end date later than that. From what I've heard the company was inspected and it was discovered I wasn't there. My social welfare has stopped being put directly into my account. Does anyone know what the penalties are like for this?

well, your entitlement has been suspended, and it wont be reopened until you engage with your local DSP office. If you worked free for a month at the company while still claiming a Jobseekers payment then you will at least owe that month of JSB back.

You won't necessarily owe that month. Just because you were working for free does not necessarily mean you were not looking for and available for work, it just means you were doing something for free until you got paid work. But you haven't said whether the person who inspected was told you were not there because you left earlier due to starting earlier. If not, it's up to you whether to explain that or just leave it out. You could just get in touch and explain it the way it happened, that you did the required length of the internship but were asked to start before you were eligible, and then it will be up to them to decide if you will be required to pay that month back. Considering that you were not paid, and went on to do an internship there which is on record and through Jobbridge, it would be quite harsh imo to make you pay back a months dole simply for starting early, as chances are you would have been on the dole for that month anyway.

Or just say you finished early, but you will need to explain why you left the internship and did not notify them, and you would almost certainly owe the fifty top up for the weeks missed. Obviously you were not offered a position at the end, and if you were aware of this it's not a bad reason to finish up early. And perhaps you thought the company would notify them of the end date.

At the end of the day, the DSP has no record of you doing an internship for that first month when you were ineligible. They really cannot prove you were not available and looking for work and make you pay back the dole for that month. But the other side of that is that since they have no proof you started early and therefore did the full length of internship, you wouldn't be entitled to the fifty euro top up for those final weeks that you didn't attend.
