The Hyundai i40 is growing on me. Easily got for €25k new.
Ford Mondeos are going cheap now as its gonna be replaced, plenty 141 pre-regs out there
You'd get an Octavia 1.6 TDI Ambition model

If it was my money. I'd buy a Civic Tourer.

I'm going to look at a mondeo and I like the civic tourer a lot. They start at 26K for the 1.6 DTEC comfort model.Just outside my price range.

I want a new car because I plan to keep it for many years and I prefer a petrol engine.

There's a discount built into that price.
Diesel is a no brainer on the civic though, its a cracker of an engine.

    New Nissan Qashqai:

New model is in demand but you probably have a better chance of finding a dealer with a petrol model in stock over a diesel one.

Civic is a nice car, seen one today and had to look twice.. Didnt realise they done a tourer :)

Hyundai i40, a great car. I know two people with them over a year and they love them, I fancy them myself, but I'd much prefer to spend that kinda money and buy a decent used Merc S Class or a BMW 5series.

Octavia and Mondeos are well up there with the best of them.

If I was in your position I would try get a car with the initial depreciation already gone, I'd be pretty certain that in the next month or two the dealer will have an ex demo 141, it will still be new but you won't loose the initial depreciation, savings which could probably tax and fuel the car for a year..

    Good luck with the search.

I thought about a used Merc or BMW but I've heard horror stories about the cost of repairs if anything goes wrong with those high end cars.I'm thinking about a Skoda or A Ford.Good suggestions.Thank you.

Kia Ceed is available in 1.4 litre petrol hatchback form and comes with a 7 year warranty.

Mitsubishi have the ASX crossover in petrol too and that comes with an 8 year warranty:

Got one myself last week, really happy with it. Huge improvement on the old one. You can get an FR estate too, might be able to find a demo possibly?

The boot space in the hatchback is lower than some of its rivals. It would still be more practical than the saloon but the saloon is a better looking car Imo.

There is no fixed percentage. It totally depends on the car, a brand new model that is in high demand like the new Nissan Qashqai, will give you a smaller discount than say the Mondeo which is coming to the end of it's life cycle and dealers want rid of. You also have to take into account end of month/quarter sales targets, etc that dealers may have.

I'd go with the Mazda 3. Better looking, nicer to drive and nicer engines than the Skoda or Focus.

My dad brought home a brochure for one of these the other day, I hadn't realised there was one, from your link says Feb 2014 release so not many around yet. Cracking looking car from the brochure anyway. Gonna try and convince him to get it. The other one he likes and has had before is the C'eed SW which is a nice car alright and has the long warranty too.

I had a brand new Diesel Mazda 6 Tourer as a hire car last week - couldn't believe it, sat in and there was 12 miles on her. It was a fine machine, I must say, and I was very impressed with the power. Drove her around (in the UK) on motorways and some surface streets, and got just under 5L/100km easy with plenty of 70mph (though this calculation includes an assumption of a genuinely full tank from Hertz at the beginning). It's a little outside your indicated budget, however, but I could definitely say it's worth a test drive.

That said, up until that day, I'd never driven a new car before :) So I might have been easily swayed by its shiny newness.

Off topic: Up until last week I'd never driven a brand new car, never considered buying one, and always swore myself off new cars. Now I'm obsessing over brochures for the first time in years. How can I kick this? I'm in my current car 3 years and I get the feeling I'm one test drive away from some mad PCP 'purchase' :D

The 1.4 engine is underpowered for the Octavia imo.

Edit: My bad, new Octavia petrol is 140bhp, that should be fine. Older model 1.4 really struggled.

Take one for a spin and see for yourself.

In fairness at 25k honda tourer would be very hard to beat. Great engines and space, plus a funky looking car. VW and Skoda are fairly blunt looks wise.

Not sure about the latest corolla, but the previous 07-13 corolla was made in Japan. The previous model to that, the 02-07 corolla was made in the uk(5dr/3dr hatchback) and turkey(saloon/estate)

Tbh the difference in quality between the Japanese made Toyota and the Toyota made else where is no longer an issue.

for example, the uk/turkish built 02-07 corolla is of higher quality Imo to that of the later 07-13 Japanese built corolla.

In the 90's and early 00's there was a difference in quality between Jap and eu made toyota's though with the Japanese examples being of higher quality in general.

I think your looking for a saloon but if I was buying a Toyota id be going for an auris over a corolla. Its a much nicer car Imo.

From memory most of the 07& corollas after the first run came from South Africa

I think we got them from japan and Turkey too depending on the engine type.

No, just the Auris over there. They don't really like small saloons, the Irish love them.

there's a few 07 and 08's here, 1.4 petrol and diesel, all are Japanese made.

The South African ones had JTD chassis numbers too AFAIK. think they were CKD kits or something and didn't come till late 08/early 09.

I'm rusty now but there are differences in the door trims around the glass between the doors, slane are colour coded and some are black. As I say I can't remember :(

Example, this is an 07 luna CBU NG with black trims.

I'm nearly sure the corolla saloon that is sold in Europe is made in Turkey along with the Verso. Jetta is built in South Africa.

OP, what about the Mazda 3:

I drive the old shape Nissan Micra.Checking new cars the one thing i found striking was the terrible rear visibility from most cars. The Skoda Octavia was terrible in this department.Civic tourer was just as bad. What cars are good in the visibility dept?
