I am looking for a reliable method of backing up all my outlook exchange emails over many years into a offline email account. I have over 3Gb of emails and they are in one large OST file. There are convertors for OST to PST format but all of them come with warnings of issues.

I still have access to the current and past emails and they are synced with the company server. In the event/likelyhood of the company shutting down, I want to recover my emails before that occurs.

Has anyone here used a reliable way to export their emails and import into another program. offline preference as the file size is large. I would like to keep the folder format intact in the export/import.

Mods : if I got the wrong section please move

From your Outlook client, under File menu, export to a PST file.

That is not available as this outlook exchange 2010. I can find OST file but no conversion or export in this version of outlook.

    Hi Damien,

It is a good approach to think about intact form of data at each point of time. During conversion of file format, it is recommended to use safe and secure utility. In case of OST to PST transformation, Outlook experts are preferred to choose Microsoft certified converter i.e. a well know authentication tag.

My suggestion is that, you should opt for stellar OST to PST converter. It is developed by a trusted Microsoft certified vendor. I have used it and I am happy to say that it works very efficiently. I didn't faced any issue while using it. I used this for MS Outlook 2010, same as required by you. Apart from converting just emails, it converts all other component like calendar, contacts, and attachments in single attempt.

You can get to know more about this software from following webpage:

PSTs are a bit of a pain if you're not using Outlook any more; I'm not aware of any other mail client that natively supports them, although courtesy of Wikipedia I've just found this freeware PST viewer. I've not used it so Use At Own Risk, etc, but it may be worth a try.

In terms of converting to other formats, there's the libpst project, which apparently lets you convert PST files to other formats like mbox (used by various clients including Thunderbird, or alternatively accessible with MBox Viewer). The only problem with libpst is that you'll probably need to compile it from source for yourself, which has been done but may be a bit fiddly.

I had a lot of trouble conversion to PST format so I gave up that idea and decided to put my gmail in outlook via IMAP as I still have access to the exchange outlook account, and then copy the folders one by one to gmail.

It works but boy is it slow and prone to hanging the whole application. After a bit of google research, it seems this is a common issue with Outlook 2010 and 2013.

All those OST to PST convertors come with a large risk attached. Few can handle folders so I gave up that idea.

If you emails are in OST and you have outlook you can use outlook to copy them accross .

use the older PST format with the 2GB limit as more apps can read them (yes you will need more than one)
