Hi, thinking of getting a van hopefully 1.6 or 1.9 and wondering if i have it under the fathers name(farmer) could i tax and insure it. I would be more inclined to get a van if it was 1.9 as tax can be cheeky. Is there much of a difference between insurance on private and commercial?

Your father would have to have a herd number to get commercial tax on it. Not sure on the insurance question.

He has alright. Insurance would be the next worry i would get a 1.6 but they are rare enough especially 306's.

Can you not just use your pps number?

Not in kilkenny anyway. Some places are stricter than other. Your supposed to only be able to use a car number or herd. Pps works in some places but they can refuse you as technically it has to be vat or herd number.

I know it works some times. But the rules are vat or herd number. When the PPS number loophole is closed then you won't be able to how long that takes is another story. Kilkenny tax office won't do the PPS number thing it's vat herd number or private tax that's basically how it works. Anyway it's of no concern to the op they have a herd number and can use that.

I filled out a form in my guard station just saying that i would only be using it for commercial purposes,i signed it along with the guard and he stamped it, i took this with the other documents, i didnt have to write down vat number or enter herd number, surely its the same country wide no?
