Car's first NCT. Garda scenario

I have a 2010 car and it's due for it's first NCT this month. I didn't realise about long waiting times and only booked it the other day. Got a date for mid-May.

2 questions. In case I'm stopped in the 6 week period of having no NCT, the Garda would hardly know it was due the end of March without checking the system would he?

Also, I printed off the confirmation letter from the NCT. Would that do if I'm asked for NCT?

I've no clue about NCT stuff because I've never had to get mine NCT'd before

Its a fair point about them not knowing about a first due NCT, unless the APNR system can tell them?

Either way, print off the confirmation letter and you should be fine. No guarantees of course; you could still be done if you catch the wrong Garda on the wrong day, but Id say its unlikely.

You can also keep chasing the NCT for a better date. Its in their charter that they must test you within 28 days or you get the test for free, and they almost certainly wont let that happen!

Too late for that, as OP already accepted appointment for mid-May.

It's quite likely you will get away with it in relation to road checks.

However check your insurance policy, what terms and conditions apply to NCT.
Many policies now, reserve the right not to pay for damage to your car, or recoup the money paid to 3rd parties from you, if your car has no valid NCT during accident.

You can ring and ask for a cancelation date in the mean time. Its what i always do. I take whatever date they have and then ask them to put me on the cancelation list!

    I think I'll do this.

    Thanks people.

Yes but its still possible to get an earlier date by simply keeping a check on the nct website. They often release dates in bundles. If a date comes up, just change the booking.

I've been trying to get a cancellation for last few weeks. out of NCT since Feb and only can get a mid May testing date. Insurance up end of next week and they've said they'll only insure me 3rd party if something happens before I get the NCT cert. is it really possible that 4 centres I've requested a cancellation for are all full up till mid June. if thats really the case, surely more centres need to be opened.

Where abouts are you? If you can, try Naas; I have never had an issue getting a test there within a fortnight of booking.
