Looking for options before I have a tooth extracted

    Hi there,
I had a root canal on a pre molar and stupidily I didn't crown it. Now it's broken quite badly, part is broken below the gum line. I went to the dentist and he told me I have to have it surgically extracted and it's too fragile to save, and even crown.
I'm booked in for this extraction in a couple of weeks and I'm wondering if I have any options to save the bone loss after the extraction if I can afford to get an implant later on. Or does it matter about the bone loss after the tooth comes out if I want to get an implant later on?
It's bothering me as you can see the missing tooth when I smile, and would like to know what I can ask the dentist about.
    Thanks in advance :)

There are ways of taking out a tooth without damaging the surrounding bone (or at least as little as humanly possible). A broken down, root canal treated premolar may prove tricky. Sure most dentists would be able to take it out but it would be at the expense of the buccal (lip side) bone and once it's gone, its gone....
It is great to keep this bone as the site is way more favourable for an implant in the future.
Unless your dentist is particularly tasty at taking out teeth, I'd be seeing an oral surgeon who does this sort of thing... That said, some oral surgeons may not appreciate the benefits of this procedure but generally if they place implants, they will....

Thanks for the info. I'll have a chat with the dentist and see what he recommends.

Out of curosity, is this the type of extraction I'll be having?

Video shows tooth extraction and fitting for a dental implant for anyone who is squeemish!

This extraction is broadly what you want, possibly a little rough for me but hey... Don't get a bicon implant, they are rubbish...
