Nissan xtrail

    Was thinking of buying an xtrail 2.2dci and I'm jus looking for some opinions if there's any owners out der.

    How reliable are they?

    What are they like on diesel?

    Are they a decent jeep?

    I presume you are talking about the first generation. Terrible yokes imo. Not very nice to drive and the 2.2dci is not known for being reliable, they eat turbos. A Rav4 would be a safer bet but you will pay more for one and diesel ones are less common.

    Yea there mostly petrol. I would prefer 4 wheel drive and there even more pricey.

    I had a 2004 2.2 dCi for 4 years, never gave me an ounce of trouble in 90,000 miles. I found it very comfortable, I did several long distance trips across Europe in it. Acres of space in it too.

    Is there some reason you need a jeep instead of a car?

    Because a jeep will cost more in fuel, maintenance and sticker price than a same-sized car, while being slower, less safe and making you look like an '06 brickie.

    Maintenance won't be to bad two of my mates are mechanics and they always look after me price wise.

    I own a small boat so I need to tow it and slipways can be very slippy sometimes so was thinking 4x4.

    Need lots of boot space for work tools.

    I do a fair bit of fishing for pike and a lot of the time I end up off road r on really rough roads need some high ground clearance.

    How is a 4x4 less safe?

    Any car suggestions?

    It will handle all of those things no problem. The boot is huge, it's virtually a van when the rear seats are folded flat too.

    Some people here just have an irrational fear/hatred of 4x4s & SUVs :D

    Have heard the xtrail gives chains and turbo problems? Does any body no if it's very common or people just exaggerating or not looking after ther engines?

    I had a 2003 DCI Sport for about 5 years, I had some trouble with an accelerator pedal sensor that was a bitch to track down, it showed up as a little bit of throttle lag, got a 2nd had one fitted and it was grand (new ones are stupid money). I changed it at about 125k miles as I was starting to get into the turbo problem and expensive problem mileage range and the 2nd hand value of the car was only about 2.5k so I decided to change before I started getting service bills that would be half the value of the car.

    As cars go it had a huge boot that was easy to get stuff in and out of - no funky angles and moulding to get in the way, the power socket in the boot was useful as well for a cool bag etc.. I had bikes on the back or kayaks on the roof more often than not along with the masses of gear that go with having young kids and it handled it all very well.

    Suprisingly good in the mud or in snow, pretty average fuel wise, alright in stop go traffic, first gear is long enough to not have to change out of straight away when you are just nudging along in traffic.
    Plenty of leg room for driver and passengers and a fairly upright position.
    I would have bought a later model x-trail when I changed car last year if I could have found a clean one without a squillion miles on the clock or delusional pricing, not many of them out there though.
    It is a good solid car that does what it is supposed to do, it has a very functional interior, no frills but comfortable, as always get it checked out by someone you trust, walk away if there are any engine power/lag related concerns as they can be very expensive to both diagnose and fix, but if you find a good one go for it.

    Foresters are very reliable and robust but not great on fuel.

    I had an Auto version for a few weeks, during the snow a few years ago. By god was that thirsty.....Round trip of 125km was using around €20 of Petrol and I think prices were slightly less than currently - that was all mainly motorway at steady 90-100 km/h. Manual will probably be a fair bit better on fuel, and I don't think that engine is known to give issues.

    Personally, I hate the driving position. Feels like you are crouched over the steering wheel like in a big van, rather than sitting behind it.

    First one I ever drove, thought I was going to die! Coming off the M50 Southbound to the Naas Road outbound, it really felt like it was about to topple over, and I didn't exactly throw it in to the bend like a sports car. That particular vehicle was a few years old and had a failry rough life - they aren't all that bad, but they do feel a bit "wallowy" on the bends.

    Plenty of space in the interior, decent boot, easy to get in and out of and the cabin is funtional, with lots of storage cubby holes. Took a little while to find the cup holder - someone on boards pointed out where it was.

    Worth test driving to see if it suits - the diesel in Kelly's looks very clean.

    Hyundai Santa Fe any good as an alternative????

    I know very little about them though - apart from the fact that the one here (Santa Fe) has been pretty decent all around since we got it in May 2012 (its a 4 wheel drive Mk 1 2.0 diesel btw).

    Not exactly the most exciting car in the world - but there again - neither is the X trail tbh.

    It is however comfortable, decent on the road - and tows well too

    One issue though - is that rear legroom isn't as good as you might think.

    Or how about a Legacy Estate??? - didn't you enquire about a focus Estate in another thread - or was that someone else

    Xtrail can have 2wd or 4wd auto or 4wd fixed depending on what button you push on the console

    Yea dat was me about the focus jus looking at all my options before I spend my money. Heard A lot of bad stories about them 1.6 engines so it kinda put me off.

    I have a 2006 X-trail 2.2
    Have it more than 2 years now and nothing but regular servicing..
    Have put 100,000km on it. Leather heated seats, huge sunroof, electric windows all round, air conditioning, selectable 2/4 WD.

    Nice to drive, diesel about 38mpg not towing and about 32 towing 1.5 ton.
    Good to pull, builders trailer with ton is no bother at all, off road its very good and I've just regular tyres. I would bring it down fields to cut timber into trailer and no issues at all. Could have done with a low range box but that's all..

    Little bit of road noise, but that could be tyres. It had continentals all round when I got it and they were definitely quieter.

    Fast as you wish to push any 4x4 on the motorway, had it round to 210kph.

    The reputation about turbos being a problem was specific to jeeps that were driven hard on motorways and no spooling down time was given. If you shut down the engine after roasting it on a motorway the turbo bearings suffer.. Not an ideal situation but that's what a nissan mechanic told me.

    Do you know which engine it is because there's 2 different 2.2 diesels? Is it the dci?

    yep.. dci

    Oh.. I should add that the timing chains do rattle a bit on startup, again I was advised that this wasnt an issue and indeed its not been one..

    Thanx man heard about the chain issue. Fully synthetic 5w 30 should reduce the chain noise on start up.

    Yep..
    Mine's the same but the lad I bought it from told me he'd had them both resprayed 6 months previous.
