Brushing With Salt

I remember years ago back in the early nineties, when I was in sixth class at school going to the dentist as I had a few issues with my teeth... Had a tooth growing in the wrong place, had one another tooth which was growing in front of one of my milk teeth (which eventually had to be extracted as it refused to fall out), bleeding gums and what I seem to recall him calling Pyree(???)

My parents weren't able to afford any sort of dental care so it was the community dentist I went to through my school. But one thing that struck me as odd was he constantly told me to brush with salt. I was only 11 or 12 or so, so I just went with it but I was one of these kids that only brushed when he was forced. Which was every day but as soon as I moved out of home, my tooth care regimen fell apart.

Needless to say the condition of my teeth has deteriorated somewhat over the last 10-15 years and it's only now that I'm starting to value my teeth. I was a smoker for the last 14 out of 15 years. These days I can feel a, I guess, plaquey build up just along the gum line. It's not visible or anything but I'm increasingly more aware of it. I started regularly brushing about 6 months ago and the condition of my teeth has improved dramatically. They're still yellowy enough but nothing that some whitening therapy can't cure as soon as I can afford it. But the bleeding gums is still an issue as is the plaque. I wonder if I started brushing with salt, as my old dentist instructed, would that remedy these issues or should I really go see a dental technician? I went to one about 10 years and she tried to remove as much of the plaque as possible but I found the procedure INCREDIBLY painful and it's not something I wish to go through again.
