    Hi
does anyone know where I can get timber at a good price? Timber in Ireland always seems so expensive. I only do a few diy projects now and then so dont be buying in bulk or anything. at the mo I'm looking to diy a console/hall table and the materials (timber, nails and screws) are coming in at about 80e which I suppose isnt too bad if you price one in a furniture shop, but I dont really have 80e? ive been on a site, buildforless.ie which is cheaper but then delivery is 30 so that doesnt save me anything?

The problem is that timber quality is going down and prices up, mainly due to high demand from large importers like China and the rest of Europe.

I regularly use timber for the cottage refurb I am doing and if at all possible use recycled stuff. It makes me cringe to see the amount of usable stuff going into landfill or being burnt on sites. On a number of occasions I have approached my local farmers and got some scrap lumber from them that was just lying around their yards.

My latest acquisition was 6 very large 22 X 12 X 4 beams ripped out of an old dairy that were going be thrown into a pit.

My advice is to try the free cycle sites on the web first. Freecycle Dublin has wood on there. Otherwise you have to bite the bullet and pay.

    Best of luck.

    TT

Builders supplies are normally a lot cheaper than a Woodies / B&Q type shop.

Due to the recent storms there is a lot of wood available now, not sure if the prices will reflect that.
