Hi I'm going to the dr tomorrow and I'm pretty sure I'll be signed off work. How does sick pay work and will the fact I claimed welfare after being temporarily laid off last June for 6 weeks make a difference?

If your GP finds you unfit for work ask him for SW cert, he/she will sign it, you complete it and drop it into your localSW office.
Unfortunately you don't get anything for the first 6 days of illness.

    Check with your employer.

Some employers will just continue to pay you as normal while you are out sick. This on the basis that you put their bank details on the form. What happens here is the employer gets reimbursed an amount, and they just then cover the balance of your wages for you and pay you as normal.

As Mrsbyrne said though, Joan Burton isn't going to pay you or your employer anything for the first six days, so it's a big ask of an employer.

If your employer doesn't pay you, you put your own details on the form and the department will fix you up for after day 6.

The doctor will backdate it for you, yes. Though, it depends on the nature of your illness. That's a conversation to have in the gp's clinic. They are the professionals.

Best of luck and just focus on getting better.

Well just handed in second weeks sick note so just have to wait and see how long it is til I'm paid. I have to say they couldn't have been nicer in welfare office.

Might be in this situation myself. Might be an obvious question but how are the welfare payments calculated? Is there a standard payment?
