This is a build for my dad. All parts should look elegant please (unlike my colourful gaming rig) He doesn't need a high end GPU but something decent. It's more aimed at CPU power. He does very large backups and a few other CPU aimed things.

    1. What is your budget?

    [€800-1300]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer?

[Work programs (office etc) + CPU intensive programs]

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows?

[No, I will verify whether or not W7 or W8 is the choice but please include either in the build]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer?

    [No]

5a. Do you need a monitor?

[Yes, a large screen 1080p one preferably. ]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future?

[1920 x 1200 I probably won't upgrade again in the near future, all depends really. If there's enough incentive I might? ]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals?

[Long ranged wifi card, a good mechanical keyboard, good mouse, good mat]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking?

[Yes, I've done it before successfully.]

    8. How can you pay?

    [Bank Transfer/Visa Debit Card]

    9. When are you purchasing?

    [2-4 weeks]

    10. If you need help building it, where are you based?

    [No help needed]

Nope, not at all, however it should be something decent.

P.S: It should stay around €1000 (budget updated)

You would be doing well to fit in an i7,decent graphics card ,copy of windows and a monitor into a €1000 euro budget without other parts suffering.

First thing id do is drop the ssd to 120gb and take 8gb of ram out, unless hes doing professional work or photography he probably wont need 16gb. Theres money to be saved on the case also, its a beautiful case but can get a cheaper one that will do.

Also a 500w power supply should be fine for that system as your money left over for a gpu is not gonna be too substantial you wont need a massive power supply

Then last id put everything through geizhals.de to see how much you can get off each part, that will get you closer to target budget. Bit of an ask though for €1000 imo

EDIT: Put together a revised build to get closer to budget

    Item|Price
    Intel Core i7-4770K Box, LGA1150|€293.27
    ASRock Z87 Pro4, Sockel 1150, ATX|€89.66
    Crucial M500 120GB SATA 6GB/s 6,4CM (2,5") 7mm|€60.40
    WD Blue 1TB 6Gb's|€49.80
    8GB-Kit Crucial Ballistix Sport Series DDR3-1600, CL9|€64.34
BitFenix Shinobi Midi-Tower USB 3.0 black, ohne Netzteil|€52.71
    Corsair Builder Serie CX500 V3 Non-Modular 80+ Bronze, 500 Watt|€52.00
    Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO - Intel/AMD|€29.69
    Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit SB-Version Englisch|€88.47
    MSI R9 270 GAMING 2G, AMD Radeon R9 270, 2GB DDR5|€153.20
    ASUS PCE-N15|€14.90
    LG Flatron 24EA53VQ|€144.55
    Shipping|€18.99
    Total|€1111.98

As regards the peripherals (mech keyboard, mouse etc) i couldnt really get them in if you wanted to stay on budget. To get those aswell i would say you would have to start for pearing back performance to fit them in the budget, probably talking about another €90-120 to get them as well. There is also a wireless card and a gpu in this build

I picked a slightly better board as it supports a few more USB 3.0,you would have six instead of five, with two at the front of the case instead of one. Could be handy if any backups are being done to external drives. Case is fairly minamilist as well, nothing flashy.

GPU is decent and shouldnt have many problems with games at 1080p,should overclock nicely as well for some free performance:)

Slightly larger monitor for slightly less as well

NONE of these prices have been put through Geizhals.de either,i reckon there could be a saving of between €40-60 if you were willing to put each item through, well worthwhile imo

Anyway, just to give you a slightly more budget conscious option

4770K is about €10 cheaper on amazon as well with free delivery

Why is there a GPU in there at all? If he doesn't game he doesn't need it.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 970 ✭✭✭yawhat!

I added the 16GB of ram as he was saying he was doing large backups. Also the 250GB SSD should be good for backups

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,407 ✭✭✭✭justsomebloke

    obvious questions are

    1) is he going to be gaming on this i.e. is there any need for a GPU

    2) what type of CPU intensive applications is he using

    3) how often and how big are the back ups? Do they have to be kept separate from the machine? Would a NAS be an option for back ups

    4) does it have to be wifi? would homeplugs be a better option?

Can i be a devils advocate here and say that OC'ing a work computer and sticking in a GPU is both unnecessary and potentially a brewing storm.

if that clock ever skips a beat you'd be very upset if critical data just corrupted for no reason.

stick in a Xeon and a €30 HD6450 if you really cant live with iGP. the xeon will run for 20 years and you can toss the GPU in the garbage when it gets to that stage.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭EoinHef

Even without the gpu though its nearly over the revised budget.

Windows and a decent monitor in a build is gonna make it hard to reach that price point while keeping i7,ssd etc

Did think of something like raid or NAS but really theres no budget for it unless something else takes a hit

+1 For a xeon build and dropping the gpu for a cheap one and forget overclocking could also get the case back from the first build as well with the savings, such a nice case:)

Just remembered that there's integrated GPUs so yeah he doesn't need a GPU really.
Those builds don't include a mechanical keyboard or good mouse (not a gaming mouse) so could someone add one? He said going up to 1100
because of the keyboard/mouse is fine.

Which one should I go for? EoinHef's build or yawhat!'s build?

    1) is he going to be gaming on this i.e. is there any need for a GPU --- Nope

    2) what type of CPU intensive applications is he using - I don't know all but he uses a default windows backup thing but the files for his business are pretty huge (for his decent laptop it takes 9-12 hours to backup it all)

    3) how often and how big are the back ups? Do they have to be kept separate from the machine? Would a NAS be an option for back ups -- I don't know, I'll find out.

    4) does it have to be wifi? would homeplugs be a better option? - No wifi is definitely the better option as we tried homeplugs and it killed the internet speed wayyy too much that not using them actually was faster.

What medium is he backing up to and what type of connection and what is the overall size of files being backed up

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Briannnn

The way he described it I thought he had massive big programs and files to backup. (Don't think badly, he does not know much about computers besides how to use them. He was amazed to find my phone could hold 64GB.)

    His backups: 30GB max
Programs: nothing as CPU intensive as Arma 2, Arma 3 for example. It's the microsoft office programs + a backup program.
Saved to: 32GB USB + computer
Connection speed: we have a 50megabit internet speed but it's only around 6-8megabits from his office because of the low end wifi card.
My room is right over the office and gets 35-40megabits with my wifi card.

So no he doesn't need that super-high end CPU but he still wants:
"A computer with a really good keyboard and mouse and good case and a very high quality screen (1080p) that is large. Also it should have high capacity (memory) and power (so it never ever lags)"

don't do this to me again... (not replying)

Are backups 30GB altogether or each time?

What about two SSDs? No HDD.

    Also, perhaps a mini-ITX build?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Briannnn

    30GB each time.
And to the mini build, nope. He'd like sometime with a nice sized case.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 970 ✭✭✭yawhat!

Looks good, but my personal opinion I would not be overclocking on a work PC. It would be good to get another SSD in there for the backups he is performing.

    Yeah , you're right.

    http://www.hardwareversand.de/Sockel+1150/78032/Intel+Core+i7-4770+Box%2C+LGA1150.article

That one instead is fine ?
I could then use that extra cash and get him a 250gb SSD instead.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 65 ✭✭Briannnn

Nevermind, 120gb is fine for him with the 1TB too. Thanks for the help guys :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,597 ✭✭✭EoinHef

You still have an overclocking board in there, not really needed if your not going for the k cpu,on phone so cant really link a board till the morning. Ill link one then, its not a major issue could just save a little money if you wanted.

Did you run all the parts through geizhals.de also?

EDIT: This board would be fine and save about €28

Is this a 32GB USB stick?

Yeah but he can only hold one or two backups on it at a time.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,407 ✭✭✭✭justsomebloke

Truthfully from my reading everything above is massive overkill. A basic i5, ssd and 8gb ram will be more then suffient. Spend the rest on decent backup software and proper USB3 hard drives. the USB keys are what is killing him and shouldn't be used for backups
