Hi just had a electric handbreak caliper replaced on my 2006 VW passat about 2 weeks ago and now the back left hand side one has packed in this morning aswell :-( should the electronic handbreak calipers release without having to press the button? When u take your foot of the clutch they are meant to automatically release is that right? Cause my one was sticking sometimes and it stuck this morning and I tried to take off and now the left hand caliper is not working. Warning light on the dash and all now. As stated above I've replaced the righthand one about two weeks ago and that's fine

Mine released when you pressed the accelerator (was a DSG/auto box though so maybe the manual is different?)

Either way though if the calipers are acting up the best bet would be not to use the brake switch at all , or you may end up (like I did) pressing it and turning the car on and off for 20 mins in a car park till it finally disengages. I ended up putting a bit of black tape over the switch so I wouldn't press it out of habit until it was sorted.

Yea the problem I was having was the calipers where disengaging properly the hole time when the switch was pressed but if I didn't press the switch and just released the clutch and accelerate there were sticking sometime especially first thing in the morning and now the back left hand caliper is fooked. They should disengage properly without having to press the button right?

Yep it should just disengage when you press the accelerator. There can be a split-second "lag" but then it should move off. My current A6 (also with electronic handbrake) is the same way.

As a rule though I rarely use the hand/electronic brake myself. Just hold it with the foot brake unless parked up and then I will hold in the brake and press the button when moving off - but again auto's are a bit different :)

Why is the handbreak sometimes sticking especially in the morning when taking off without using the button? Is that a result of the old caliper itself or is that a different conponent like the switch itself?

Not being pedantic but it's a handbrake.

Yes but the handbreak should disengage without having to press the electronic button. Once u release the clutch and accelerate it should automatically disengage.

If you don't have your seatbelt on it won't disengage and will be sticky. If you try and pull away too quickly again it won't disengage.

The switch also gives trouble and is a cheap fix and again it can cause a sticking issue. I'd start with that before proceeding to another caliper change.

Yea but the calipers were shot but I'd say ill still have the sticking issue. The calipers are like €300 a pop. How much is the switch?

AFAIK the calipers also have to be re-programmed after being installed so you can't just fit them and start driving away again. The switch is cheap enough, I think I paid about €20 the last time I got one.

Have you taken it to a garage with proper diagnostic equipment?

Yes I taken it to a garage with the proper diagnostic equipment and they replaced a caliper for me a few weeks ago and now the other caliper is shot so I brought it back to him today and it's in there now. He's goin to replace the caliper tomorrow but I'm afraid the sticking issue will still be there when I get the car back. Would the sticking issue be the actual switch on the dash and should I get that repaced aswell? The switch is cheap anyway?

Tbh a proper diagnostics check will tell him what needs to be replaced but he will need specific software (not a fault code reader) to reset the calipers. I started with the switch in mine before having to change a caliper. Got it sorted in the end.

If I wanted to change the electronic hand break button myself, is that a DIY job? I know it's just a matter of taking off the side panel for access and then just disconnecting the button and replacing in reverse order but by disconnecting the button it won't set off any warning lamps or anything of that sort will it? And having to bring it back to a garage to reset on computer??

    Thanks

Yes its a two minute change no lights will be set off. I did one with the ignition off and a small screwdriver to pop the old one out.
