Am struck with the oldest version of it. I've tried logging in and off out of facebook, clearing caches etc but no joy. Any other suggestions that i can try?

What type of phone is it? What version of Android are you on?
Perhaps delete the app and then reinstall?

The phone is old, low spec and tbh probably incapable of running the latest FB app(Due to the app size and caching requirement) without disabling every other running process or at the very least getting very laggy/freezing.
If you want to use FB on that phone, rather than trying to install/upgrade the app I'd recommend you just access it via the browser.
I know that doesn't sound like a great option but you have a phone rocking only 256mb of ram and that limits you greatly.

To uninstall an app on android 2.2 or 2.3 go to menu>settings>applications and then select the app and uninstall, if you have cleared the app cache as you said, its in the same screen just choose uninstall rather than clear data or delete cache.

yeah i agree, thinking of getting a new one as the space isn't great. when i went into the applications menu, to the app, the uninstall button is greyed out. i think i may use the browser instead. Thanks for your help though :)
