Quickest way to get used car taxed

Will be buying a car today (all going well) but tax is out a couple of months. If I wanted to get her taxed right away, how do I go about it, without expecting the owner to get the tax sorted?

In the past, I used to just bring the log book into the tax office with the sale section completed and get it taxed there and then, but the new tax rules make that impossible.

I also realise the seller is supposed to send the log book off, but it has suited me better to take the log book to get the car taxed, or to simply resell the car. I always left a signed note to say I had purchased the car on such a date and time and let the seller take a snap of my license for peace of mind if they wanted.

dont worry about it, wait till you get the log book and then do your tax online, if you stopped in the mean time just show the cps a copy of your recietp etc
99% of the time you wont even meet a check point in that duration, just wathc for traffic wardens as they can itcket you for non display

Just in the interest of clarity, its entire down to the Garda who stops you. They have every right to book you for driving a non-taxed vehicle. Failure to display a valid disk and driving without tax are two separate offences. There is no leniency and if this was the case, I'd just keep a 'receipt' in my glovebox and change the date every week. Then I'd never have to tax my car. How many times do you think a Garda has heard 'I just bought it, sir'

Its a big risk to be honest so unless you absolutely have to and accept the risks, I'd leave it parked up on private land until its taxed.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think when you buy a car you have to physically go to the tax office the first time you want to tax it. I don't think you can do it online.
Unless things have changed in last 2 yrs. Which is possible.

Bearing in mind all the disappearing penalty points huha lately I wouldn't be overly surprised if a Garda was a tad more reluctant in using discretion in traffic offences.

You can request a PIN once the car is formally registered in your name, afaik.

Oh great! Good to know cause I've just bought a car and it needs to be taxed by end of month.
    Cheers

    Link, click on "PIN Retrieval"
    https://www.motortax.ie/

I think the change of ownership has to be processed by Shannon before you can use it, so that your name and address match the VLC. You can click on "Vehicle Transaction Enquiry" menu item to check if the ownership change has been registered.

A genuine receipt can easily be validated though by cross checking it with the date of purchase on the log book.

No Garda, not one, is going to go to that hassle. You'll need to prove that in court and either way, the offence still stands. You had no tax on a car in a public place. Case closed unfortunately. There is no clause or exception for 'just bought it' etc so what the receipt says is irrelevant. I'm not sure what type of system would make that fair as honestly I can't see why people can't just buy a car with the foresight of knowing its not / will have to be taxed before I can drive it

I knew a fella that had the book for the car in the previous owners name and wrote the current date on the book approaching a checkpoint.

Pretty lousy stunt but it does go on I'm afraid

So i picked up a mondeo, but not the heap of crap i was first interested in. Total misrepresentation. The parts of the car not in the photos were badly damaged. Was quite annoyed about it. Anyway, not all was lost....i viewed a very nice 2005 mondeo, well minded with over a year nct on it, picked up for just €1300. Car wont be used for a few weeks, so sale was dated april 1st and seller will send logbook closer to date. Friend of mine drove the car home for me and she is parked up now until she is taxed at least.

Well in the interest of clarity, i just bought myself a new car at the start of the month , its been out of tax since November. I've been driving round like Andy Dufrance tax free for the last three weeks, I only revcieved the log book off shannon a few days ago and have now taxed the car online, but i probably wont see the disk for another few days yet.
I cant see any way I would get charged for not having tax in my position, this is my experience not just a <racism removed by moderator> perspective.

But saying that I havent meet a check point in around the last 3years
