    Hi all,
Can a teacher covering a maternity from Nov to May use their stamps from June onwards?
    Thanks

You've been earning holiday pay to negate the fact that you won't be paid over the summer.

That is what I was thinking but not sure if that's to cover holidays during the maternity contract or not as the contract end date is May.
Anyone with experience of this may know for sure?

It is correct that you are receiving an hourly rate which includes a percentage for holiday pay. However you should sign-on the first week in June so that your PRSI record is kept up to date. It is likely that once they calculate how much holiday pay you have received, you would be paid Jobseekers Benefit for the last few weeks of summer. You should also sign-on for the Easter holidays.

Thanks for that, a friend of mine had mentioned something along those lines but I wasn't totally sure.
Great to hear from people who know. :)

Yeah I've done this a few times
It's exactly as sitstill says - sign on anyway. If memory serves me right it'd be about mid to late July that you would be entitled to something.
Are you doing any sec work? Keep any letters as proof of starting and finishing times.
And defo sign on for the holidays. It's a pain but worth it to keep your info up to date.

If you are already overpaid (assuming a mid level rate) for the job, why would you try get more money out of the state?

    Is this not unethical?

Like anyone they will only get what they are entitled to.

They are not "over paid" as you put it, they are paid an amount to include a portion of summer pay due to the fact that their contract ends before then.
As others have said they won't receive anything for June, July and may receive some in August depending on what they have been paid so far this year.

At no stage will they be getting paid on the double

As the other poster said it is in no way 'over payment', there is a proportion extra per hour, however when the contract ends in May this proportion extra is not enough to cover the full summer. Would you have teachers with no income for this time? Also it is fair to say we pay more than our share of taxes to make up for these few weeks in August that we would need jobseekers.

I'd like to say something more "unethical" but will have to contend with

People can only claim what they're entitled to

Teachers after all pay tax just like every other worker in this country

You try to raise a family on an irregular paycheck like part time substitute teaching pays and get to me

Finally as it's such an easy gig why haven't you joined the gravy train?!

    I'm unfollowing the thread now
