Hi folks, was test driving a 2.0TDi at the weekend ( 2006 ) and found it really nice. My budget unfortunately will not extend past the B6 variant but them's the breaks:o

I've got about 5.5K max so I'm on the lookout. I know that the injectors were an issue ( I see a lot advertised state that they were done under a recall, and also there are known issues with that stupid electronic hand break ).

Any feedback from the knowledgeable folk / current or ex owners would be greatly appreciated.

I had a 1.9 TDI for a year or so and was a nightmare. It was a 2006 too.

DMF went on it after 55k miles
    Electric handbrake went
Steering column decided to stop working

I'd steer clear if at all possible.

Had one for 5 years (a 2006 2.0 TDI with the DSG box) and it was a great car.. despite the horror stories you read here and elsewhere!

Yes they are prone to the injector problem but any affected should have been looked at under that recall). Mine was done as a preventative measure by VW NI/UK even though it was an Irish car. Bear in mind that issue also affected Audi's and Skoda's with the same engine.. it wasn't just a Passat problem.

Had a problem with one of the rear calipers (sorted out by George Dalton who posts here too), the DMF needed replacing, and the fuel pump died one morning but considering I racked up 200k km on it (243000 km when I sold it last summer) that's all reasonable wear and tear really.

Just make sure it's been serviced on time with the right parts/oils and you should be OK. Very comfortable cars, loads of rear seat/boot space and fairly handy on the pocket (my one cost about €100 to fill - probably a bit less now at current prices - and would do 1000-1100km of mostly motorway driving for that) with decent power when you need it.

Make sure you get a Comfortline or above spec though and the usual timing belt etc checks

    Thanks lads,

Kaiser, assuming that a car had not experienced the injector issue and had not been back, would the recall eligibility have lapsed at this stage ?

Not sure to be honest.. I don't know if there was an "end date" on it. I do know they were proactive about it though - even VW IRL mailed me about it, though they were still slow to acknowledge the problem after VW UK issued the recall.
Also if the car had been serviced by VW after the recall was issued it would have flagged as needing doing (that's how mine was done)

I'd imagine bringing the car to VW would show it as needing the replacement injectors and it SHOULD be covered but a quick call to one of the bigger VW dealer/service centres should confirm that.
If you get nowhere with the Irish lot, try up north.. I got mine done/serviced in Donnelly's in Enniskillen and found them excellent to deal with.

Had a 2006 Comfortline 2.0TDI 140 bhp for 6 years and clocked up 220k kms.T'was a very nice drive. It had injectors replaced under warranty , hand break switch & steering column out of warranty. They are fond of front wishbone bushes.
It was a very spacious car with a huge boot.

    Cheers Kaiser,

just viewed one. 120K miles. 06. Nice spec ( Cruise Con, auto lights / wipers, front & rear parking sensors which is rare enough, the nice backlit aircon controls, 6 disc loader ). Sh1t catalunya wheels ( I think thats what they are called ) so will need to source a set of Monte Carlo 17". TB & WP done 12/13. Injectors done under recall in 2012. Wishbone bushings also in 2012. All by Main VW dealer in Navan. Looks like a runner. Wish me luck

Sounds good. Just make sure they have documents/receipts of work carried out.
