I have an interview next week for an IT position with a county council.

Anyone familiar with the typical format of a council interview?

Could be a silly question I guess as all councils might operate differently.

    Thanks.

I would imagine a County Council will adopt a competency based interview process, where past behaviour is an indicator of future behaviour - have they indicated that you will be interviewed on specific competancies?
if not no harm in asking them.

You should know about major projects in process or planned for the city(Limerick?)
Also a quick look at the city/county development plan would be no harm.

Know what IT infrastructire, platforms etc are in use.

    Thanks for that.

Yeah I might ring them for more information.

Preparing for competency scenario questions is probably a good idea anyway.

In my experience. It used to be a bunch of career public servants who know nothing about IT doing the interviewing. It may have changed now. There may be one ‘Technical’ Interviewer. Most of the questions were not IT related. They ask about projects in the county, planning, water services etc. also the role of local government. You should read up about the LGMA. They do a lot of IT and systems development for councils.

A word of caution OP, It's often the case that the person who gets the job is already doing the job. i.e. The person may be doing the job on a temporary basis but to renew the contract/ make the person permanent the council must appear to have fair and open interviews. Don't get your hopes up.

Thanks for that, will look that stuff up.

Yeah I hope the job is attainable but it's really hard to know what the story is I guess. Worth a shot anyway.
