Speed Workouts for Kids

    I just spoke with a coach who noted youngsters aged 10-11 should not do speed workouts but focus on aerobic training.

    He was against holding breaths also.

    Any thoughts on these theories

    He's not wrong.

    The focus should be on correct technique, turns, dives, sweeps and balance. Once that is all pretty well in place, steady aerobic work is the way to go.

    Speed/Power workouts get most effect in teens and older.

    Power and speed workouts will generally make them lose interest in swimming, as they won't notice the benefits. It's all about keeping them interested and making sure they enjoy it, up until about thirteen.

    Hypoxic work is a no-no in kids also. you don't know their metabolisms and they might not feel comfortable standing up to you and telling you to GF if they get dizzy or nauseous. Risk of shallow water blackout is always present in breath-holding work. Do you really want to have to jump in after a kid, and then spend months trying to convince them that you were wrong and that it's borderline beneficial drill for well muscled athletes ?
