Problems with the St. Patrick's Day parade

Now I'm only speaking for the Dublin Parade here as it's the only one I've attended. I think it's the global primary one anyway as it's in the capital city irrespective of if it's the oldest or not... (it's not).

My first issue is with the blatant advertising which occurred in today's parade. Namely the six Mini cars (in tricolour formation), which effectively led the parade. Now obviously somebody's got to pay for the parade & it's great that corporations are coming forward to be part of it, however, these should be at least 4-5 places back & not leading the bloody thing. The parade is a tribute to being Irish (from a religious tribute)

It should be led by the Lord Mayor's coach (as the parade itself derives from the Lord Mayor's procession), followed by a trooping of the colour by the Army (full enlisted army first please, not reserves), Gardai & fire service. After that allow any sponsors to take their place as long as their display is entertaining.

Secondly. We need something above head height, there were a lot of kids at the parade who don't get to see much because of their height. We need more floats and Macy's thanksgiving style inflatables. Marching bands are great, but for kids who are at ass height with nobody to lift them on shoulders, there's budget all entertainment to be had.

Lastly, I believe the theme this year was "Lets make History". So why did not one float or troop use that theme? From now on, can we make them adopt the theme & use it as part of the festivities? I've seen enough arty-fatty steampunk type floats to last a lifetime, I'd much rather see a well produced unified parade than the shambles which we're getting.

We have a great opportunity with the festival for global marketing. Lets not screw it up.

Oh, as an aside, while I'm all about the parade being all inclusive & the LBGT community being involved, lets not forget what we're celebrating & come along & get into it, just make the rainbow flags green.

Watching on TV (for the first time in forever), I'm struck by how small in scale it is.

Looking at the 6oclock news later comparing to provincial parades, (tractors & children in GAA jerseys) the only difference is length.

They don't get to see much because of selfish adults standing in front of them.
