I'm trying to work out the cost of buying a digital camera (with a custom wide angle lens). With shipping, it's around $425. From reading around, including on the revenue.ie site, import procedures, postal guide, I did a quick tot and it might come to around $525. Does anyone have experience of this, does this sound right?

I may not go for it in the end.

    Cost ($425) +
    shipping
    +
Use Customs rate of Exchange on the day
    Add Duty @ relevant rate
    +
Add 23% on to the total of cost+shipping+Duty

You can also use dutycalculator depending who delivers you will also need to ad and admin fee, anpost is about 6 others like Fedex, DHL, etc are more than that I think about 12-15

Yeah, I was on that site yesterday and also the fees for An Post, etc, came up in the revenue.ie guides hence my guess at around $525 ish. It's kind of a speciality item, but I'll ask in a bricks and mortars shop here first.

If there's an invoice they charge customs from that price, unless the price is something like €25, in that case they will ask you for a copy of paypal, email, etc to show how much you paid.

I can't remember where I read it, here or somewhere else, but it was something about customs on camera accessories more so than the body/device (depending on the value). Not sure I have that right. Anyway, the $525 I'm running with as a guess was an attempt to factor in everything, including the customs charge which is a percentage of the declared value of the item..?

By the sound of it you're low; the cost of the camera would take you to 525 but add in postage (registered, insured) and the handling fee and you're probably looking closer to $600.

There is surprisingly no duty on digitial cameras.

I think the max couriers can charge is a €15 fee, I think an post charge €6. There was some recent thread with other charges from couriers though.

I often ask for the cheapest shipping possible, this means less vat to pay on the shipping. Also the cheapest is usually standard US post which in my experience is more likely to slip through the system compared to couriers.

Rough breakdown, I may have missed something.

The unit cost of the camera, including lens, etc: $399.90
    Discount coupon: - $39.99
    Shipping*: $65.00
    Subtotal: $424.91 (approx €305.14)

    Irish side of things

    Assume VAT at 23%: €70.20
    Assume An Post handling: €6

    Approx total: €381.34

*Gulp, I know. This is priority (7-10 days). I'm asking for the price for first class (15-20 days).
