    I have mint 16 installed on 2 partitions ,
Partition 1 is the one ,im using to launch mint, partition 2 contains the older version.
IS there any way i can acess partition 2 ,
    extended partition,
partition 6 70 gig , from my linux mint os
Without using a live cd, or linux from a bootable usb drive.
THE mint on partition 6 only loads to the password ,
screen, then stops.after a few seconds.
    I,LL format that partition ,
after i backup the data, mainly music, podcasts from partition 6.
IS there a program i can download that,ll give me acess to partition 6 .ext 4 70 gig
i can use sudo , apt get, basic terminal commands .
    I,M not a linux expert.

I,VE tried google ing this ,
it just says mount partition , at mount point .

see pic here for more info,

i tried recovery mode ,did not work,
so i just installed mint 16 again ,on a different partition.

I know i can use DSL linux, live cd etc to acess the partition and copy to external drive.

Create a mount point to your liking in the working OS .... maybe
    at /mnt/old-mint

    mkdir -p /mnt/old-mint

then mount the partition to it

    mount /dev/sdXn /mnt/old-mint

where Xn are the drive letter and partition number such as sda6

(the above commands need root privileges)

After that you can access the mounted partition using your file manager.

    om-pc tom # mkdir -p /mnt/old-mint
    tom-pc tom # sudo mkdir -p /mnt/old-mint
    tom-pc tom # sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt/old-mint
mount: /dev/sda6 already mounted or /mnt/old-mint busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda6 is already mounted on /mnt/old-mint

    pasted from terminal,

    sda6 is mounted ,
still cant see partition ,2, sda 6 in file manager.

i,m using sudo or su to get root acess

I put in command sda 6 is mounted,
i just need to get acess to files,
i,ll probably just use one of the 5 cds, live cds ,eg ubuntu i have in a drawer.
eg i,ve been using linux for years to fix ,old windows pcs.
to acess old folders on drive c/.

try putting /mnt/old-mint into the file manager
i'm not familiar with mint specifically
    typing
    mount

in a prompt will tell you what is mounted where

Im not sure how or why you have 2 mints on two different partitions, or why you cant get into them from the file manager,

try opening the file manger as root, in a terminal run "sudo nautilus"

You should now be able get into any partitions you want via an elevated file manager, and copy/paste drag/drop stuff from one to another

    i installed,mint 16,
    dual core laptop,2.0ghz .2gig ram.
after 2 weeks it stopped working.
so i installed it on partition 2 ,mint 16.

I,M using live cd Point linux,
    both filesystem, s,
    partitions appear in filemanager.
i,m in the process of copying files to partition 1 40gig
then i,ll format partition 2 70gig in ntfs,

mint is based on ubuntu , uses the standard terminal commands.

    i have 2 MINTS,
    first install stopped ,working,
    this is my main pc,
i needed to install mint version 2,
    in partition 2
    to acess the web.

i,ll delete first install from sda 6 70gig when i have all files copied to partition 1.
    could not fix 1st installation.

    maybe theres a security problem,
since i use same username ,password , on both installations,
    re filemanager acess.

    I have start bootup menu,
    mint 16 32bit,
    recovery mode etc,
    mint Petra 16 ,

    the os i,m using now.boots from partition 2 ,40gig.

last entry is MINT 16 petra ,non working install ,in sda/6 partition 2, 7gig.

if i Format partition 70 gig,in ntfs, will that cause any problem,
eg stop mint 16 32bit from booting up.

    i turn on laptop,
    press enter,
    mint 16 32bit loads up.

I copied all the files over i need ,to partition 1.
so theres nothing left in 70gig partition that i need.

OR would it be safer just to delete all folders ,and leave 70 gig partition as it is now.?

Why are you styling your posts like a sonnet?

The safest option rarely starts with the phrase "Delete all folders and just".

Can you paste the output of the commands "mount" and "df -h".

    Thanks.

I used a linux, livecd to copy all the files to partition 1,
Therefore i have no reason to use mount commands.
ALL thats left in 70gig sda/6 is the old installation mint files.
i reckon i,ll just end up going round in circles ,trying commands ,and just wasting time.
    AS in my previous post,
    i can mount the partition,
but it does,nt show up in file manager.
Probably something to do with makedir command.

    om-pc tom # mkdir -p /mnt/old-mint
    tom-pc tom # sudo mkdir -p /mnt/old-mint
    tom-pc tom # sudo mount /dev/sda6 /mnt/old-mint
mount: /dev/sda6 already mounted or /mnt/old-mint busy
mount: according to mtab, /dev/sda6 is already mounted on /mnt/old-mint

AT some point i,ll delete the old install , to free up space.

The reason I asked you to paste the output of mount was so I could try to decipher what is the current situation on your machine and properly advise you. If the partition is mounted but you can't see it in the file manager it may be permissions.

as above sda 6 is mounted,
i think i need to make a directory,
but i already have all the files copied over.
i could just copy all data , to a usb drive and make a new installation mint 16,

and use gparted ,or just use install process to make a new partition,
    105gig,
eg one big partition, and a small swap partition for linux.
i dont have time to do that at the moment.

I do not understand what you re trying to say here.

Im totally baffled by all this.
If I want to access data on another partition I just use the file manager. Sometimes I just have to enter a password to access it

If I needed to specifically mount it as it wasnt showing in the places menu of the file manager, I would open Kpartition manager in KDE or gparted and mount the partition there and then open the file manager again

    What am I missing here?
