Ewes scratching

    Hello all,

My ewes are scratching like hell, with one or two beginning to get a few bald patches in the usual places around the shoulder and belly...

I will dose / inject em as they go after lambing (I don't want to inject em before lambing)

What's the best thing to use - I used cydectin before, but I thought there was something better out there which treated worms and external parasites?

Any opinions on what ye would use (subject to usual disclaimers of ye all not being vets, etc, etc) ;)

Hi UJ, would have thought cydectin would be the best product but very expensive. There's similar products but I think you may have to inject twice 10 days apart.
Injected my own with cydectin this year after some we're scratching and seemed to stop after 10 days or so. I think it was live but not sure. Always has the benefit of lowering worm burdens on turnout but others may feel its a road to resistance

Any lambs yet apart from early ones?

    Hi Razor,

We have 6 lambs so far. We won't have a big crop of lambs this year am afraid tho, scanning was poor enough...

I'm off now for the next 2 weeks for lambing, hopefully this weather will continue, it's unreal... :)
Grass is finally started to come on...

So cydectin is the job. I thought I heard someone mention something else, but I might have dreamt that too :)

    Are you lambin yerself?

You can use Zearl should be cheaper than cydectin and you only need to inject them once.

Used noromectin, need to inject any ones with scab twice, only give one dose to one's without obvious symptoms. Biggest problem is sheep go nuts after getting injection and start backing down the race, butting into you when trying to inject the next one.

    Hi Sea,

I told em in the interview I had 2 weeks holidays booked. ;)
I didn't tell em the holidays were lambing ewes. :)
i was working for 2 weeks. 2 weeks on, 2 weeks off - its the right way to work :)

I think almost 90% were raddled within the first service, so hopefully they'll all lamb in the two weeks.
After that, they'll just have to manage themselves...

    Hi Waala,

Dectomax (now Zearl) - that's what I heard of before.
Might see if I can get that, if tis cheaper like you say.
    Cheers.

If you change and go for Cydectin I believe there's two versions of it, a 1% and a 2%, used for prevention and for treatment. I had a thread on it before and Teagasc advisor got in touch with someone working for the company.

I thought the injectables only killed one type of lice(sucking or biting not sure which) and scab. When we had compulsory dipping I think it helped a lot with lice as well as scab.

    is it lice or scab
pull a tuft of wool check it under a magnifying glass lice easily visible
if its lice vector pouron works reasonably well
    injectables not effective for lice.

scab at this stage would be a real disaster lambs will also be infected injecting ewes while essential will just buy time everything will have to be injected again when lambs are old enough.

Agree, getting rid of compulsory dipping was a bad idea.

Ye are all getting me giddy starting 29th here and I'm off for two weeks from the 28th. Isn't it amazing how we enjoy taking two weeks off to lamb ewes and work even harder:D

That is late lambing for your part of the world, no?

Little bit but suits me and I keep ewes out and lamb outside lessening the workload.
