    hello

could anyone recommend good shampoo and conditioner for greasy hair please. I have to wash mine daily, if. it it gets manky by midday the next day.
my hairdresser recommended tigi products but I looked at the blurb and reviews on amazon and they don't seem to be for greasy hair, more for dry or colour-damaged hair.

any advice appreciated! I'm prepared to spend a good bit if it's the right product.

T Gel is great, I used it as a teenager and still use it the odd time if my hair is going through a greasy phase. I try not to shampoo every day when it's greasy as I think it stimulates oil production - dry shampoo is your friend!

thanks- is that neutrogena t gel?

even dry shampoo isn't great- it takes my hair from "absolutely manky" to "manky but will do to lounge around house and hope nobody calls" level. I wouldn't get away with it at work.

    it's a curse!

Yea Neutrogena T Gel, does the trick.
I find if I put in dry shampoo before it gets really greasy, like maybe halfway through the day, it looks better even a day later. If that makes any sense!

Which one are you using now? Mane and tail is a great cleansing shampoo

I just use Pantene at the moment, which is probably not a good option for greasy hair.

Definitely not, it coats your hair in silicone (iirc) and eventually weighs it down, leaving it dull, lanky and greasy looking.

This might not be what you want, but I just gradually extended the time between washing my hair and it improved a lot. I went from every day to every 2 days to every 3 days over the course of 6 months or so.

I also use Tigi Urban Antidotes which has done great things for my hair in terms of health.

Also, washing my hair at night really speeds up the grease building up, so I wash it in the mornings only. I get 2 sleeps out of my hair, so if I wash it at night, it's greasy again in 2 days rather than 3.

I washed every morning or felt and looked grubby, but a friend gave me some of this shampoo:

    http://www.kloraneusa.com/HairCare/oily-hair.htm

And over a week or so it did seem to regulate the oil. It's very mild and non irritating so that might have something to do with it. I don't use it much anymore, but I do find that any 'greasy' hair shampoo strips my scalp so much that it produces more to compensate, so I avoid those like the plague.

Going from every day to every other day doesn't sound like a big leap, but it feels like one!

I've never tried the dry shampoo version, so it might be worth giving both a shot.

thanks folks. think I'll try the neutrogena and klorane ones, give each a trial over a fortnight or so and report back!

I'd love to know how you get on. I love my hair but it is incredibly greasy. I have to wash it every morning as well. My hairdresser suggested dyeing it(!) to strip some of the oils. I think I'll give the T-Gel a go too.

Dyeing it would change the texture of your hair but I don't see how it could possibly influence the amount of oil produced by your scalp?

    I have no idea either!

Just to add-if you're prone to greasy hair, don't put conditioner all over your hair, only put it on the ends.
Try and steer away from products once your hair's dry and try use a clarifying shampoo once a week.

cut out conditioner, it just adds another coating. also, change your pillow cases every 2/3 days if you can.

i used to wash my hair every day but now i wash it once sometimes twice a week.

The chemicals in hair dye are great for stripping out the built up stuff in your hair, my hair is always in great condition after a colour.

I'd lay off the conditioner for a while too or just put it in the bottom inch if you really have to

I've just ordered the klorane shampoo off amazon so I'll put up a post once I've tried it for about two weeks.

I have the same problem combined with sensitive scalp. Shampoos like Pantene drive it crazy. I use la Roche Posay kerium for oily hair and am very happy with it. I'd almost get two days out of it now but maybe the problem is abating as I get older as well.

Kiehls almond shampoo was good also and you can buy that in a small size to try. (I think its almond I'm not sure, its their bestseller shampoo anyway)

I suffer with this problem too, my hair always looks gross on day 2. I've tried loads of different shampoos for oily hair, I even tried the Kerastase one even tho I swore I'd never spend that much on a shampoo but it made no difference. I used some shampoo from Lush for a while called Big hair, it worked pretty well for a while. It is a clarifying shampoo and it volumises so I think the main reason it worked is that my hair wasn't making as much contact with my scalp. It started to really dry out my scalp after a while tho so I had to cut back on using it significantly.

I've tried spreading the time between washes out and it hasn't helped at all. I've tried using a shampoo for normal hair and one for dry hair just to see if the issue was the oils being stripped and it didn't help either. Gonna try some of the suggestions in this thread and see how they go.

One thing I have heard but haven't been brave enough to try is rinsing the hair with apple cider vinegar. Apparently the issue can sometimes be caused by hard water, which causes a build up of crap in the hair and the vinegar apparently stops this. I haven't tried this yet because I'm terrified I'll end up smelling like a bag of chips for weeks but I really should give it a go.

I've just ordered some more too because it's a while since I've used it. It's a nice product to use, smells nice and leaves your hair nice and fresh and light. Hope it works out for you.

    Bought the Klorane myself :pac:

I definitely aggravate my situation by constantly touching my hair, twirling it etc. I need to grow out of that.

Because although your scalp would still be greasy, your hair texture is dryer and so would soak a small bit of the grease making your last shampoo last a little longer.

I use wen products, which is just a conditioner that you use which also cleanses the hair but no suds- I find it brill but it's not cheap as you have to use 16 - 20 pumps each wash.

I have fine hair that gets greasy quickly (or rather, shows the grease quickly) and when I dyed it blonde I easily got 2 (almost 3) days out of it. My hair's naturally quite glossy in texture as well as being fine, so any grease shows up immediately whereas the dye made it coarser and the grease just kinda made it less coarse, rather than slimey if you know what I mean.

Plus, your hair can be greasy for different reasons. You might produce excessive amounts of oil or your hair might just be naturally fine and glossy so even normal amounts of oil production weigh it down immediately - or you might have fine hair with excessive oil production. If your hair is just fine and glossy and rather than your scalp producing abnormally high amounts of oil I wouldn't go for any harsh oil-control shampoos because it's not the oil production that's the problem and you could easily irritate your scalp by using something too harsh.

One thing I have found to be true, though, is that if your hair does get greasy stay well clear of opaque shampoos (like pantene). Go for something clear. All that stuff in them that makes it opaque will just sit as a residue on your hair and weigh it down. Weighed down hair is in more contact with your scalp and grease is transferred more quickly onto it. I also find that doing a double shampooing helps. I use a small amount first just to wash the grease off the hair basically, then the second shampoo washes the hair itself if that makes sense. It's like cleansing your face - the first cleanse takes the makeup and pollution off, the second one actually cleans out your skin and pores. Then condition the ends with a lightweight conditioner.

I get about a day and half out of my hair doing that whereas with an opaque shampoo and heavy conditioner I get a day at the start, but after a while don't even get half a day due to residue build up.

It might be worth also getting a clarifying shampoo to use once a month, can make a big difference.

    Hi, just posting an update.

I tried the klorane shampoo, which was a bit of a disaster- it worked in that my hair was no longer greasy but it went to the opposite extreme, I had straw-like wurzul gummidge-esque hair, which was worse than the greasy hair, so I've gone back to Pantene while I track down the neutrogena shampoo.

for what it's worth i had a same type of issue, and something i randomly read one day in the daily mail is currently working for me,

    wash your hair backwards,

it sounds stupid but put the conditioner on first, then do the shampoo, i am not sure how it works exactly but my hair is less greasy/dull lifeless since i started doing it.

i will try and find the article and post back here if i get it.

Edit found it: Dailymail Hair article

I'm trying this at the moment too and it's working for me. Just a note though, it looked shockingly bad after 'backwards wash' number 1, and got greasy much quicker than normal, but I persevered and it's much improved.

How about just using it once a week? I use head n shoulders for greasy hair every now and again to remove product build up. Pantene is quite heavy

I use Johnson's Baby Shampoo, my girlfriend told me about it. I have extremely greasy hair, The next day after shampooing it's so greasy it actually looks wet. I stopped using conditioner and just use the Johnson's now. It's worked pretty good.

You could also try timotei, very easy to get. The one for normal hair does mine fine.

I used to have very greasy hair but now get 2-3 days out of every hair wash. I use the green elvive shampoo and conditioner. Conditioner only on the ends. But once a week I use tresemme deep cleanse shampoo and the remoisturise conditioner. It gets rid of the grease and product build up in my hair. I highly recommend it. Hairdresser was the one to recommend it to me.

It definitely does have to do with what products you use, but it also has to do with quite literally, training your hair. Almost detoxing it. In our effort to keep clean, with the products we use and the frequency, we almost take away what the body regulates, naturally.

It is not ideal (but its only for a few weeks - yes I am a professional working woman), but the way I trained it for greasiness was as follows:
    - Wash your hair (with a clarifying shampoo) and condition the tips.
    - Again, as per above, it is not what we like to do (as Westerners) but you need to leave it/not wash it, for at least 5/6 days. By all means, shower away as normal, just NOT your hair. Tie it up out of your face (for work etc).
    - On next wash, again, clarifying shampoo/conditioner on the tips. Again leave it.
    - Then on next attempt, cut it down to washing every 4 days. Then to as you wish. Wash once with clarifying shampoo and then a shampoo for normal hair (to soften it) and condition.

I kid you not. I have past the shoulder length hair. And I get compliments allll the time and "what do you use?". I dont use anything, bar wash it once/twice per week. There is no magic product. And it is as simple as that. I trained it. All it took was patience. I washed my hair last on Thursday evening. And today, it still looks good! But this evening, I will wash it again.

    I'm sorry I recommended it Sam :(.

I bought some more myself, since it's been a while since I used it, and I think they changed the formula. Like you, I was left with hard, straw-like hair. Disaster.

I've been using Suave professionals damage care shampoo and conditioner to undo the damage, and it's actually insanely good for less than $2 each! Available on Amazon for anyone interested.

I had seriously greasy hair after using a Tigi conditioner - found the Pantene Pro V Aqua Light stuff great - its sulphate free. I also used a Timotei conditioner for greasy hair and then every few days used the Tigi one - it really sorted my hair out.

The new Elvive Fibrology Thickening shampoo sounds good too - just about to try it.

Also try Loreal Light Shampoo. It's pink with a bright green lid, not in every range but I got it in Boots a month ago. It's especially for greasy hair and I notice a difference for sure!

    Another grease head here
A few I've tried-Panthene Clarifying (clear bottle) widely available, Timotei for greasy hair. Alberto Balsam do one for greasy hair too(got it in Tesco)
Also tesco were doing an own brand shampoo that was for greasy hair-tried it too was ok
There's another one I've heard of but can't find-Neutogena Clean-supposed to be very good

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,031 ✭✭✭we'llallhavetea

Loreal pure resource professional range, have oily hair, it's the only thing that works for me. It costs €12 - €15 for a bottle of it. Personally I don't think you need to cut out conditioner, just be totally anal about only applying to your ends.
(If you're friends with a hair stylist maybe they could get you the large 1500ml bottles of loreal professional range and they only cost €15 - actually criminal that the small bottles cost the same!)
