Yeah, I know that's not going to happen!

    1. What is your budget? [€500]

    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Kitchen desktop PC. For any jobs where the laptop isn't handy, an occasional bit smallish CFD project (FDS - but nothing crazy). Would like it to be able to run MS Flight Sim X fairly decently.

    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? [Yes]

    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Have an old Dell Dimension 500 desktop if the PSU / case etc are any good?

    5. Do you need a monitor? [No]

5a. If yes, what size do you need. [n/a]

5b. If no, what resolution is your current monitor and do you plan to upgrade in the near future? [1280x1024 Might upgrade in future]

    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? [no]

    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? [No]

    8. How can you pay? [Credit Card/Laser]

    9. When are you purchasing? [no mad panic]

    Thanks
    10. If you need help building it, where are you based? [n/a]

Any ideas on this one - better to build or buy off the shelf?

My script isn't working at the minute to do the table. This should do you fine and you can add a graphics card if you want better graphics performance.

Do you plan on storing a lot of videos, photos films etc? Would need to change it around a bit then.

If you want even more processing power You could up the processor to an I5 and still be under the 500

I think spending a quarter or fifth of his budget is crazy for a ssd, no need for one here! OP could add that later if desired!

Asking a lot to have a pc that will run Flight Sim X well for €500. You're running at 720p at least which should make things a lot easier.

The SSD is in there as flight sim X really needs one to not be a jittery mess. I'd probably go with a hdd + ssd combo instead though. I'd partition the ssd using 60gb for the OS + small startup/background programs and the other 60gb as cache space for the hdd.

You can get a 4 month trial of windows as well meaning you can buy it further down the line when you have the extra money. Cutting the price of windows out of this build will be asking a lot.

    Prices got using www.geizhals.de

    Item|Price
    Intel Core i3-4130 Box, LGA1150|€90.97
    ASRock H81M-HDS, Sockel 1150, mATX|€40.04
    Corsair VS Serie VS450, Non-Modular, 80+|€34.68
    ASUS R7260X-DC2OC-2GD5, AMD Radeon R7 260X, 2GB DDR5|€113.13
    Crucial M500 120GB SATA 6GB/s 6,4CM (2,5") 7mm|€56.52
    WD Blue 1TB 6Gb's|€46.80
8GB-Kit Crucial Ballistix Sport XT Series DDR3-1600, CL9|€58.06
Cooler Master Silencio 352 Matt, ohne Netzteil|€48.79

    Total|€500.98

    Thanks for all the help.
If budget went up to €600, where should I put it?

Assuming you were still going to use the trial version of windows I'd up the processor to the i5 4440 and the graphics card to the R9 270.

You could go for a 1080p monitor either if you wanted.

If the OP was willing to spend 175 on a quality 2nd hand p67 board(something like asrock fatality pro) and 2500k how would that stand to his requirements?
    Surely better than I3 ???

Good luck getting a 2500k + board for €130. It would only be marginally faster than the Haswell i3 as well.
