As title says, bit of an emergency at the moment. The attachment from the float to the valve seems faulty and water is gushing everywhere, only way to stop it at the moment is to turn off the mains.

You could try Woodies Or B&Q. You don't say where you are. That might help people give better suggestions.

Ring B&Q Liffey Valley and check before you drive out.

Went into Woodies, and the one they told me to buy turns out to be the wrong one. FFS!

Can you post a picture of your old one?

So this is my old one:

In Woodies they told me to get http://www.woodiesdiy.com/Product/Filling-Valves-and-Float-Valves-Side-Entry-Plastic-Float-Valve/12955/6.0.0.1

My problem is that after removing the old one I still have a bit attached

And it seems like the one in Woodies is not compatible with that set-up.

Edit: I moved into this apartment a month ago and the cistern was always a bit "runny".
I opened it today thinking I just needed to screw something a bit tighter and the whole thing came apart more or less as soon as I touched it, I reckon the people living it before had it held on a hope and a prayer. Think there's a bit missing with the old float valve, but can't find a proper diagram online to double check that (it says BS1212 PT3 Shires on the old one)

The one in the Woodies illustration is not compatible with the original valve and the parts are not interchangeable.
You would be better buying a complete new valve. I would recommend Fluid master as they are quite reliable.
BTW. if you are renting it is your Landlords responsibllity to repair these things.
If it all goes horribly wrong you will be left with the repair bill.

    Cheers!

Unfortunately landord is away for the weekend and unreachable so I have to take care of it myself.

Bought a Pro Plumb one as they had no Fluid Master available but now I have a new problem. probably better off starting a different thread...

Unscrew the green collar of the original unit and remove the black round seal. If one side is worn/pitted, replace it the other way round for a temporary fix. Otherwise make a temporary seal by cutting one from an old belt. Difficult but possible with patience.
