Looking to get a diesel car and have a budget of 5k.
Only requirements is that it has 5 doors and max a 1.6 engine and that it wont be hugely expensive to maintain(ie turbo etc).
Other than that(and given the obvious that its reliable and wont clap out in a few weeks)I'm open to suggestions of the best make and model to go for.

    Thanks :)

Small engine diesels are in crazy demand so you'll be lucky to get an 05/06 with that budget if you want something decent that doesn't have intergalactic mileage. Look at the 1.4 corolla. 1.6 focus or 1.3 Astra. Do you definately need a diesel? What kind if driving do you need it for? You'd get a cracking petrol motor for 5k and no turbo, dmf, dpf etc. to worry about.

    Thanks for the reply.
Doing a lot of driving so costing a fortune(I'm rural but having to drive to Dublin and elsewehere a couple of times a week. School runs alone are 30 miles a day )
Have a petrol 1.4 and nothing wrong with it apart from what its costing me to run:(
I'm not bothered about the year etc as long as the mileage isnt crazy either.
Its the maintaining the diesel that's worrying.

What would you reckon the upper end of mileage that I would be looking at on a car that I would hope will last me for a few years?

On a 9/10 year old car service history and condition would be alot more important than milage

There is only €159 of a difference in motor tax between 1.6 and 1.9 which works out at just €3 extra a week. Considering up to 1.9 litre will open up more options to you. The VAG 1.9 TDi for example is used in various Audi, VW, Seat and Skoda cars.
