For the past week I've been hearing strange sounds in my attic. It sounds like someone moving something..it doesn't sound like a scuttling, scurrying noise that you might expect mice to make.
    It's quite thud-dish too.

I'm considering getting Rentokil out to have a look...does anyone know how much they charge for a visit?
    I'm in South Dublin.

why not take a look first?
    it could be anything;
birds (they are building nests atm)
    bats
missing slate/ hole, wind blowing through
    plumbing making noise
    heating, cooling expansion etc

unlikely to be vermin with warmer weather

Because I don't want to get up there and would prefer someone else to do it!

If its vermon de will hide if you go up, so don't worry, have a look if you see no evidence of birds or anything set a couple of traps before calling rentokil
(Chocolate is good for catching mice)

I doubt its mice from the noise described. The water pipes in my house can sometimes make all sorts of noises usually when there's trapped air and the rads need bleeding but I'd also put my money on a bird.. You could check if its the pipes by turning your heating on and seeing if thats when the noise happens.
But someone will have to get up there and have a look, if you really don't want to go up there yourself is there any friend or family member you could ask before paying for it?

Rentakil will come out and look and advise free of charge. We had/have a similar racket in attic/soffit. I looked all over attic and could see nothing. Got Rentakil out and handed over 330 euro. They have put down bait (poison) which hasn't been touched and there's still noise in attic. I think now it might be birds but I was frantic in case it was rats which we had in a shed. Rentakil were to come back and put a camera in soffit but haven't done this yet. You could get them out and see what they say but be wary of little phrases like rats making their way down into the hot press etc which will put the heart crossways in you.

Sounds like a con job. Is that all they did? Put down poison?

Yes they put down poison. They said the stuff you get in hardware shops etc isn't strong enough and their stuff is better. I suppose there isn't much else they can do.

The sound turned out to be a flower basket banging off my outside wall, because of the bad winds.
I feel like a right twit now :o
Thanks for your replies though :)
